How to Tell if a Female Dog is Clear After Delivering Puppies 🐶🐾

After a dog gives birth, many pet owners worry whether all puppies and placentas have been delivered or if something is still left inside the uterus. Retained material can cause serious infections, so monitoring the mother after delivery is very important.

Here are a few signs that the mother dog has completed delivery safely:

🔹 No more strong contractions – If the dog has stopped pushing and appears calm for several hours, labor is usually finished.
🔹 Placenta count matches puppies – Normally each puppy has one placenta. Make sure the number of placentas equals the number of puppies.
🔹 Normal vaginal discharge – A small amount of dark green or reddish discharge for a few days can be normal after whelping.
🔹 Mother is relaxed and caring for puppies – A comfortable mother feeding and cleaning her puppies is a good sign labor is over.
🔹 Normal appetite and temperature – If the dog is eating, drinking, and her temperature stays around 101–102.5°F (38.3–39.2°C), she is likely stable.

⚠️ Warning signs that something may still be in the uterus:
• Continuous strong contractions without a puppy
