“I’ve treated this nail for years… so why won’t it grow back?” 🤔

If your toenail stays thick, lifted, or detached no matter what you do, the problem may not actually be the nail itself.

Sometimes the hidden cause is something called subungual exostosis — a small bony growth that develops on the tip of the toe, underneath the nail.

As it grows, it can push the nail upward and prevent it from attaching properly to the nail bed.

Common signs:

✔️ The nail never seems to grow all the way to the tip of the toe

✔️ The nail remains detached for months or even years

✔️ The nail becomes thickened or deformed

✔️ Treatments don’t seem to make a difference

What causes it?

• Repeated trauma to the toe

• Sports and running

• Tight footwear

• Constant pressure on the toes

Here’s the important part:

👉 If an exostosis is present, treating the nail itself usually won’t solve the problem.

The nail may continue to lift or remain detached because the real issue is the bone underneath it.

That’s why an X-ray is often needed to confirm or rule out an exostosis.

The good news?

Not every detached nail is caused by an exostosis.

If an X-ray shows there is no bony growth, there are many other possible causes of nail lifting and thickening that can often be managed with the right treatment plan and proper care.

Sometimes the answer isn’t on the surface of the nail — it’s underneath it. 🦴

I’ve talked about this so many times… and today it happened again.

A client called asking if I do acrylic extensions on toenails.

I explained that I only offer regular polish or gel polish for toes — no hard products.

She said, “oh, I’m looking for acrylic” — and hung up.
Probably booked with someone else.

And honestly? I’m fine with that. Because I’m not going to knowingly damage someone’s nails just to keep a booking.

Hard gel, polygel, acrylic on toes is not “extra care” or “premium service”. It’s the wrong approach.

Toenails are meant to move and adapt to pressure.
Making them rigid only increases stress on the nail. And that’s how you end up with lifting, separation and discomfort.

Not every service should be done just because it can be done. I choose healthy nails over trends and quick money — every time.
