Psychiatrist David R. Hawkins described four ways we tend to avoid difficult feelings: suppression, repression, projection and escape.
What struck me most wasn't the theory itself.
It was realizing how easily these patterns become invisible.
They stop feeling like something we do.
They start feeling like who we are.
Being the one who is always strong.
Always busy.
Always positive.
Always irritated by everyone else.
Always saying, "I'm fine."
After years of repeating them, we rarely recognize them as strategies anymore.
We call them personality.
We call them habits.
We call them "just the way I am."
Perhaps that's why so many emotions seem to stay with us for years.
They are still waiting.
Not to be explained.
Simply to be felt.
I'm curious...
Which slide made you stop and think, "That's me"?

Psychiatrist David R. Hawkins, in his book Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender, proposed a perspective that turns the way many of us think about the mind upside down.
We usually believe that first comes a thought, and then a feeling.
Hawkins suggested that, very often, it happens the other way around.
First, there is a feeling.
Only then does the mind begin trying to understand it. To make sense of it. To tell a story about it.
If fear is underneath, the mind creates thoughts about danger.
If shame is underneath, it begins searching for evidence that we are not enough.
This doesn't mean that every thought comes from a feeling, or that we can't influence the way we think.
But it invites a different question.
What if the thought isn't the problem?
What if it's the feeling we've never truly allowed ourselves to feel?
This perspective has deeply influenced the way I look at bodywork.
Because when the body begins to feel safe, it's not only our emotions that can change.
Sometimes, our thoughts change too.

The body doesn't tighten without a reason.
For a long time, I believed returning to the body meant learning how to relax.
Today, I see it differently.
Returning to the body is returning to a relationship.
A relationship with the only place that has been with you through every moment of your life.
Your body has witnessed everything.
Every joy.
Every disappointment.
Every time you silenced yourself.
Every time you said yes while something inside you quietly whispered no.
It never stopped speaking.
It was simply easier to listen to the voices outside than to the one within.
Little by little, we become fluent in explaining ourselves instead of feeling ourselves.
We analyse.
We justify.
We rationalise.
And almost without noticing, we lose the quiet conversation we once had with our own body.
The body still speaks.
Through a breath that suddenly becomes shallow.
Through a belly that tightens.
Through shoulders that never quite soften.
Not as an enemy.
As a companion that has been carrying our story all along.
The work is not to force the body into silence.
The work is to create enough stillness to hear it again.
To notice that some sensations belong to this moment.
Others belong to an old story that is still asking to be seen with compassion.
That is why, for me, healing has never been about fixing the body.
It has always been about rebuilding a relationship with ourselves.
Everything else grows from there.

Return. To your body. To feeling. To yourself.

So many women leave my treatment room saying,
"I didn't even realize how much tension I was carrying."
That's what happens when tension becomes your normal.
The first step is
allowing your body to remember what relaxation feels like.
