Masajul suedez a aparut la inceputul secolului 19 numindu-se "gimnastica medicala suedeza" iar miscarile erau efectuate de catre un medic terapeut. Cativa ani mai tarziu, in Europa au devenit cunoscute ca "miscari suedeze" iar in anul 1858 fiind cunoscut in Statele Unite ca "miscari suedeze curative". In ziua de astazi este cunoscut simplu sub denumirea de "masaj suedez"
