Dr. Daniel Amen argues that one of the biggest problems in modern mental healthcare is the tendency to diagnose based primarily on symptoms and then move quickly toward medication. In this part of the Diary of a CEO podcast, he questions whether mental health should be approached more broadly as brain health, with greater attention to factors such as sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress, trauma, lifestyle and underlying biological differences. Amen also discusses the widespread use of antidepressants and benzodiazepines and argues that psychiatric medication should not automatically be viewed as the only solution. His broader message is that mental health treatment should involve understanding the individual and the potential causes behind symptoms, rather than simply treating the symptoms themselves. These are Dr. Amen’s views and claims discussed in the podcast, not a recommendation to stop or change prescribed medication. Treatment decisions should be made with a qualified healthcare professional.
