One thing I’d like to clarify because it’s a common misconception…

The rotation of the interlocking has nothing to do with your grid.

The rotation is the pattern used to tighten the new growth and secure the root. Its purpose is to maintain the integrity of the loc and help prevent issues like holes, weak spots, or distortion.

The grid is your parting pattern, the foundation that was established during your install.

Over time, depending on your hair texture, density, curl pattern, growth, and how long you go between maintenance appointments, that grid can become less visible. This doesn’t necessarily mean the interlocking was done incorrectly.

If the original parting has disappeared to the point that it must be recreated, that’s a separate skill and requires additional time and precision. Re-establishing a foundation is different from simply maintaining one.

That’s why I always say:
Interlocking maintains the root.
Parting maintains the foundation.

They’re two different parts of the service, and understanding the difference helps clients better understand the Microloc maintenance process. 💛

It is generally recommended to retighten microlocs every 4 to 6 weeks. This schedule helps maintain clean parts, prevents excessive new growth from matting at the roots, and keeps the locs on a consistent maintenance routine.

However, as a loctician, I personally keep most of my clients on a 6 to 8 week schedule, depending on their hair and lifestyle. This allows enough time for healthy new growth to come in naturally without overmanipulating the roots too often. It also gives the scalp a break between maintenance sessions while still keeping the locs clean, structured, and well maintained.

The goal is always balance; healthy locs and healthy roots.

On the other hand, waiting too long between retightenings (beyond 8 to 10+ weeks for most clients) can lead to matting at the roots, buildup, and more difficult maintenance.

Every head is different, but the focus should always be on healthy growth, proper technique, and consistency, not just frequency.

The right schedule is the one that keeps your locs strong, your scalp healthy, and your journey sustainable longterm.

• 4 to 6 weeks = more “maintenance heavy” approach (cleaner look, more frequent upkeep)
• 6 to 8 weeks = balanced, healthier spacing for most clients
• 8 to 10+ weeks = only okay for some textures/stages, but increases matting risk at the root

The first 6 months of your loc journey are the foundation phase. This is where your locs are forming, settling, and starting to take shape. It’s important to understand that this stage is not about perfection, it’s about process.

In the beginning, your parts may still be very visible and your locs may feel soft, loose, or not fully “locked.” This is normal. Depending on your hair texture and starter method, you may also experience some unraveling, frizz, or shrinkage. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong, it means your hair is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Around months 2 to 4, you’ll start to notice your locs beginning to bud and swell. This is where the locking process really starts to happen. Some locs may look thicker than others, and that’s part of the natural journey.

By months 4 to 6, you may start seeing more consistency in the shape of your locs, but they will still feel new and developing. Frizz is still expected, and your locs are still learning to hold their structure.

During this stage, your maintenance is everything. Staying on a consistent retightening schedule, keeping your scalp clean, and properly protecting your hair at night will determine how well your locs mature.

Most importantly, patience is key. The first 6 months are not about “finished results” they are about trusting the process, building your foundation, and allowing your locs to form the right way.

Every loc journey is different. consistency is what brings the best results.
