Neglected Tropical Diseases Day | 30 January 2026

Theme:
“Unite, Act and Eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases”

On 30 January 2026, we joined students at Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) to commemorate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, emphasizing the importance of taking decisive action to eliminate these historically overlooked diseases worldwide. This collaboration aimed to inspire young people to educate their communities on the recommended actions to tackle NTDs.

Message to the Community
1. Get tested or screened if you suspect you are affected, and encourage others to do the same.
2. Seek treatment promptly to prevent complications and long-term disability.
3. Protect yourself and your family by practicing good hygiene, maintaining clean surroundings, and keeping up with vaccinations and mass drugs administration.
4. Support those affected and help reduce stigma by spreading awareness and showing empathy.
5. Work together as a community and involve local leaders in efforts to prevent and control these diseases.

This effort demonstrated the power of youth as agents of change, motivating the KIUT community to collectively take lasting action against NTDs.

World Rabies Day: Protecting Lives in Tarakea Through Dog Vaccination

In Tarakea village in northern Tanzania, Daud Kanyenye, Director of OneHealth at Tanzania Health Awake, went door to door visiting households to provide dog vaccinations. He ensured each dog was vaccinated safely and explained to owners how rabies is a deadly but preventable disease.

While moving from home to home, he educated children and adults on responsible pet care and the importance of vaccination in preventing human infections.

This door-to-door vaccination effort goes beyond animal health — it is a life-saving intervention. Each vaccinated dog reduces the risk of rabies in the community and brings Tarakea closer to the global Zero by 30 goal to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies deaths.

On World Rabies Day, Daud’s initiative highlights how community-level action can save lives, one dog at a time.

We are delighted to share that our General Secretary Ismail Patson Mwasege, has been selected to join the World Food Forum Youth Representatives Programme 2025.

The World Food Forum, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is a global network that empowers youth to transform agrifood systems and drive progress toward a healthier, more sustainable, and hunger-free world.

Through this programme, Tanzania Health Awake is proud to bring the voice of Tanzanian youth to the global stage — contributing to dialogue and action on food security, public health, and the One Health approach to resilient agrifood systems.

This milestone is both an honor and a responsibility. We look forward to collaborating with fellow youth representatives, FAO, and global partners to accelerate collective efforts in shaping sustainable solutions for our communities.

As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness and influence behavior change, we actively participated in National Farmers Day an influential platform that brought together farmers, livestock keepers, agrovets, veterinary professionals, community leaders, local authorities, and government stakeholders. Through one-on-one advocacy, group discussions, and the distribution of educational materials, we delivered bold messages on infection prevention and the responsible use of medicines in agriculture.

Health Farming, No AMR campaign is empowering livestock farmers, veterinary professionals, and the public to adopt sustainable farming practices that reduce disease transmission and curb the misuse of antibiotics. Poor infection prevention and control measures often push farmers to rely heavily on antibiotics, threatening food safety and public health.

Campaign directly complements the National Action Plan on IPC/WASH and reinforces the importance of hygiene, biosecurity, and responsible medicine use.
