By comparison, Dr. Ornish’s patients following a low-fat vegetarian diet with exercise lost about 22 pounds in a year, saw a 23% drop in cholesterol, and reportedly had no troubling side effects.

A comprehensive analysis of over 3,000 individuals has mapped out the modern diet into three distinct categories, reinforcing the critical link between plant-based eating and long-term cardiovascular health.
Individuals who closely adhered to the plant-based and sustainable pattern tended to be older and generally maintained healthier lifestyles overall.
The stakes of these dietary choices became clear over the course of a 20-year follow-up period, during which 36% of all participants experienced a cardiovascular event. While fatal heart health issues remained rare, researchers noted a stark correlation between a person's daily menu and their long-term health: those with the lowest adherence to the plant-based, sustainable diet faced a significantly higher lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease.
