Melanoma can sometimes look like an ordinary mole, which is why knowing what changes to watch for matters. When checking your skin, remember the ABCDEs of melanoma:

🔎 A — Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
🔎 B — Border: Irregular, blurred, or poorly defined edges
🔎 C — Color: Multiple or uneven colors within one spot
🔎 D — Diameter: Larger than about 6 mm — although melanomas can be smaller
🔎 E — Evolving: Any mole or lesion that is changing in size, shape, color, or appearance

The “E” is especially important: if something on your skin is new, changing, bleeding, itching, or simply looks different from your other spots, it’s worth having a dermatology provider take a look.
