Asheville, North Carolina: Tangent’s September 2026 release delivers a new production run of our HO Scale Pullman-Standard PS-1 40’ Boxcar with 9’ Door! No pre-orders are required – these cars are available right now! This is the third Pullman-Standard boxcar system – after our PS-1 40’ Mini Hy-Cube and PS-1 40’ Combination door box cars - in our line of cars that introduce market-leading design and tooling practices, and is geared toward modelers who desire the most accurate models with a “family-appearance” between prototypes manufactured by the same builder.

Pullman-Standard’s PS-1 box car line evolved to feature a variety of different door combinations in order to satisfy customer requests for “purpose-built” box cars. Across the transition and early diesel eras, between 1951 and 1962, Pullman-Standard built 9-foot door, 40-foot long PS-1s for several railroads. Each railroad specified different doors and other appliances, and as production progressed the exterior sill and end arrangements changed. Railroads purchased the 9-foot door cars for various services, including forest products, machinery, appliances, paper, and merchandise, where the large 9-foot door opening made loading with forklifts significantly easier. These cars wandered all over the North American rail network into the late 1980s.

The Tangent Scale Models PS-1 9-foot door boxcar will stand out on your layout just like the real cars did. Our models include incredible road-specific detailing, and we have produced three road-specific body shells. Each model includes see-through running boards, accurate door options, multiple hand brake options, wire brake piping, release rods, metal underbody-mount stirrup steps, and fine bracket grabs and ladders. Like all Tangent models, these cars come standard with HO scale’s most accurate colors and car stenciling. These models are finished with correct road-specific plain or roller bearing 50-ton trucks, representing a total of four all-new truck designs for our 40’ PS-1 system car replicas. Finally, our cars are weighted properly and are equipped with Kadee® couplers which means they operate as good as they look.

Our September 2026 release includes thirteen(!) railroad schemes:

- Lancaster & Chester (L&C) "Delivery Brown 1-1952" illustrates the second railroad to order these PS-1 box cars with 9’ Doors. The Southern Railway ordered more than 2,000 of these 9’ door cars during the transition era, but interchange railroad partner Lancaster & Chester – a smaller railroad located off the Southern Railway between Charlotte and Columbia SC also ordered these cars for delivery from Pullman-Standard in 1952! These cars have distinctive “early” side sill configurations that have a pronounced deep side sill support underneath the door area only, ending before the trucks. These models have the early version of the Superior 9’ door, and Miner handbrake housings and wheels like the prototype did. These cars have the “classic” transition-era red carbody. Stenciling includes the classy “The Springmaid Line” logo on the right side of the car, a Pullman Bessemer plant logo, and the classy Lancaster and Chester stylized roadname graphics. The “Springmaid Line” is a reference to the railroad’s one-time owners, Spring Mills, which is a textile company that became famous for producing towels, sheets, and other cotton textile products sold under brands such as Springmaid. The railroad hauled both inbound materials and outbound finished goods. The railroad also served other shippers in a region of South Carolina that is still a vibrant railcar consumer today. The roof is painted with black car cement just like the prototype, and includes the typical Pullman overspray onto the top of it from the sides and at the ends. Finally, these models ride on Tangent’s gorgeous Barber S-2 50-Ton plain bearing truck, complete with separate brake beam detail. - Lancaster & Chester (L&C) "Blue & Gray" 1964+ offers a nifty box car scheme that was literally seen all over the USA from 1964 into the 1980s. The Lancaster & Chester livened up the drab brown/red box car scheme that was applied to these cars when delivered from Pullman in 1952. Instead, L&C kept with the spirit of the early 1960s, where bright colors and graphics began to really rule the rails, forging new identity for railroads. The railroad adopted a two-tone scheme of blue on the bottom half of the car and gray on the top. This beautiful car includes the sharp, large “The Springmaid Line” logo on the right side of the car in yellow and multiple shades of blues. The logo is amazingly recreated on our model – you have to see it with your own eyes to believe it! The left side of the car includes the classy Lancaster and Chester stylized logo. - Lancaster & Chester (L&C) "Echotone Special" 1963+ is a neat “unique box car” SKU to go with our other L&C models from 1964. L&C kept with the spirit of the early 1960s, where bright colors and graphics began to really rule the rails, forging new identity for railroads. This special car, painted by the railroad in 1963, offered a purple color for the carbody with light blue and white stripe patterns mimicking the colorful Springmaid line of “Echotone” patterned bedsheets. This beautiful car includes the sharp, large “The Springmaid Line” logo on the right side of the car in multiple colors, and it was “wrapped in a bow,” just like the Springmaid bedsheet packaging (see photo below). - Southern Railway (SOU) "Repaint" 1958+ is the first of three Southern Railway classic red repaint schemes released by Tangent in 2026 and as applied to these 1951/1952 built Pullman-Standard PS-1s. This 1958+ version of Southern has a large “SOUTHERN” and road number stencil applied to the left side of the car. This scheme has the feeling of a “modernized” version of the original delivery scheme that was applied to these cars by Pullman-Standard when they were built – minus the logo but plus the large lettering. These models have the early version of the Superior 9’ door, and Miner handbrake housings and wheels like the prototype did. These models ride on Tangent’s gorgeous Barber S-2 50-Ton plain bearing truck, complete with separate brake beam detail. - Southern Railway (SOU) "Serves the South Repaint" 1962+ is the second of three Southern Railway classic red repaint schemes released by Tangent in 2026 and as applied to these 1951/1952 built Pullman-Standard PS-1s. This 1962+ version of Southern has large “SOUTHERN” stenciling applied to the left side of the car, plus a large road number. The right side of the car includes a large “SOUTHERN SERVES THE SOUTH” stencil applied across three indented lines, which is eye-catching and shows some playful iteration away from the “plain” logo only Southern scheme from the early 1950s. These models have the early version of the Superior 9’ door, and Miner handbrake housings and wheels like the prototype did. These models ride on Tangent’s gorgeous Barber S-2 50-Ton plain bearing truck, complete with separate brake beam detail. - Southern Railway (SOU) "Serves the South Repaint" 1965+ is the third of three Southern Railway classic red repaint schemes released by Tangent in 2026 and as applied to these 1951/1952 built Pullman-Standard PS-1s. This 1965+ version of Southern has large “SOUTHERN SERVES THE SOUTH” stenciling applied to the left side of the car, plus a large road number. This beautiful car has a yellow “DF” applied to the door, to confirm that the car was indeed an XML car with loading devices. The right side of the car includes a return stencil: “SPECIALLY EQUIPPED CAR RETURN PROMPTLY WHEN EMPTY TO SOU. RAILWAY AT ANY JUNCTION POINT.” These models have the early version of the Superior 9’ door, and Miner handbrake housings and wheels like the prototype did. These models ride on Tangent’s gorgeous Barber S-2 50-Ton plain bearing truck, complete with separate brake beam detail. - Green Bay & Western (GBW) "Yellow Repaint" 1963+ brings an updated version of the PS-1s that we offered in our first production. These are the signature 1963 era repaints that GB&W shops produced, where they repainted the classy yellow paint with a federal yellow color, and by painting the entire car in yellow – including the sides, ends, and roof! GB&W’s yellow paint looks great on these 9’ door cars, especially because they also added the football-shaped “Home of the Packers” logo to the car. Great for the GB&W modelers, and even for Chicago Bears fans, since these cars were seen in Chicago as well as pretty much else – hauling paper from Biron, Wisconsin! In fact, these cars are assigned cars, as identified with the stenciling “ASSIGNED FOR PAPER LOADING AT BIRON, WISCONSIN” and a “WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO THE GREEN BAY AND WESTERN R.R.” notation, typical for assigned cars of the period. The right side of the car includes the large “Green Bay and Western” letters and the left side includes the distinctive “Green Bay Route” logo with white lettering and red background. Our GB&W models come complete with an accurate 9’ Pullman-Standard door. - Chicago & North Western (CNW) "Original Clinton Reweigh" 1959+ is a classic box car scheme, this time the C&NW “brown” car with black ends, but this is a patched car, where the original “NEW 1956” date has been painted out and a “CLN 10-59” has been restenciled in its place, with the CLN representing the Clinton, IA car shop. This beautiful car includes the sharp, large C&NW logo in black and white on the upper right carbody side. The left side of the car includes the CNW reporting marks with lines above and below them as found on these Pullman-Standard painted cars. The brake stencils above the right side trucks have been updated to match the prototype photos. These boxcars were built at Pullman-Standard’s Michigan City, IN plant and of course our car covers that correctly with the “TENTH ANNIVERSARY 1956” PS-1 stenciling next to the door. These cars include the second version of the Superior 9’ door, with a different horizontal support pattern than the Southern cars that preceded these. These cars have a black car cement roof, but the roof includes the typical Pullman carbody color overspray onto the top of it from the sides. This new model rides on the Tangent Scale Models 50-Ton ASF A-3 plain bearing truck. This C&NW model is offered with one road number - this is an exact replica. And don’t forget – C&NW stenciled “Safety First” with yellow stenciling on the carbody side corners! SKU 26021

- Chicago & North Western (CNW) "Original DF Equipped" 1964+ is a patched CNW 1956 paint job, modernized for a 1964 and later era. This car is a C&NW “brown” car with black ends, but this is a patched car, where the original “NEW 1956” date has been painted out and a “COB 6 64” has been restenciled in its place, with the COB representing the Council Bluffs, IA yard (scale). This beautiful car includes the sharp, large C&NW logo in black and white on the upper right carbody side. C&NW also added a large “DF” inside of a rectangle stencil to the right side of the car. The left side of the car includes the CNW reporting marks with lines above and below them as found on these Pullman-Standard painted cars. The brake stencils above the right side trucks have been updated to match the prototype photos including a paint patch on top of a paint patch! The car also has an added stencil “WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO AGENT C.N.W. R.R. NEENAH WIS. VIA REVERSE ROUTE” to show its likely assignment to load at the Kimberly-Clark paper mill in Neenah, WI. These boxcars were built at Pullman-Standard’s Michigan City, IN plant and of course our car covers that correctly with the stenciling next to the door. These cars include the second version of the Superior 9’ door, with a different horizontal support pattern than the Southern cars that preceded these. These cars have a black car cement roof, but the roof includes the typical Pullman carbody color overspray onto the top of it from the sides. This new model rides on the Tangent Scale Models 50-Ton ASF A-3 plain bearing truck. This C&NW model is offered with 2 road numbers! SKU 26022

- Louisville & Nashville (L&N) "Delivery 12-1956" is a delivery scheme car that Pullman-Standard created for L&N in 1956. This is a “brown” car all around – on ends and roof. This beautiful car includes the sharp and carefully-recreated “The Old Reliable” logo in script on the right side of the car, along with the Louisville & Nashville roadname stenciling. The left side of the car includes the L&N reporting marks with road number. These boxcars were built at Pullman-Standard’s Michigan City, IN plant and of course our car covers that correctly with the “TENTH ANNIVERSARY 1956” PS-1 stenciling next to the door. These cars include the second version of the Superior 9’ door. This new model rides on the Tangent 50-Ton ASF A-3 plain bearing truck. Our L&N models are offered with your choice of 4 road numbers. - Louisville & Nashville (L&N) "The Dixie Line" 1962+ is a repainted “blue L&N car.” This is the classic repaint scheme that L&N applied to many box cars in the 1960s that includes “The Dixie Line” and “Louisville & Nashville” stenciling on the right side of the car. The left side of the car includes large L&N reporting marks. While all of the stenciling on this car is “yellow,” when you look closer you will see two shades of yellow. Some of it is a bit more “orangy” in nature, true to the prototype L&N lettering practices of applying Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing’s “CODIT” Reflective Liquid coating to the larger lettering graphics and numbers. These cars had a return stencil applied to them as well: “FOR APPLIANCE LOADING ONLY RETURN TO PRR MANSFIELD OHIO.” In other words, these cars were assigned to appliance loading service originating from the large Westinghouse factory complex there. These cars include the second version of the Superior 9’ door. This new model rides on the Tangent Scale Models 50-Ton ASF A-3 plain bearing truck. These L&N models are offered with your choice of 3 road numbers for the 1962 and later modeler! SKU 26024

- Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) "Delivery 7-1961" another classic box car scheme, this time the MKT “red” car with black ends, roof, and underframe. This beautiful car includes the sharp MKT logo in yellow, red, and black – gorgeously replicated of course – with a large “DF” stencil to indicate that the car was equipped with internal loading devices. The left side of the car includes the “M-K-T” (literally!) reporting marks, and the highlight of the car – stenciling to show “WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO AGENT, P.R.R., COLUMBUS, OHIO.” Yes – this part was part of a pool which made them go far and wide, likely assigned to loading at Westinghouse! Return stencils like these were typical for assigned box cars of the 1960s. These boxcars were built at Pullman-Standard’s Michigan City, IN plant and of course our car covers that correctly with the correct stenciling at the left side of the car. These cars include a Pullman-Standard 9’ door, which has a tiny black “DF” italicized stencil on top of the yellow door stencil – a really neat feature if you are paying attention. These cars have a black car cement roof, but the roof includes the typical Pullman carbody color overspray onto the top of it from the sides. This new model rides on the market-leading Tangent 50-Ton ASF A-3 Ride Control Roller Bearing truck – with rotating “Timken” bearing caps! - Milwaukee Road (MILW) "Delivery 3-61" w/ Superior Door illustrates our newest exact replica for the Milwaukee Road modeler. Delivered in Milwaukee Road’s standard box car red color, the 9’ door PS-1 was a large example fleet car utilized for many different services, similar to the “ribside” fleet but more useful in the 1960s and onward due to the larger door arrangement. This portion of the Milwaukee Road car order had Superior 9’ sliding doors on them, which we represent accurately with our models. Please note: this car looks different from the cars we released in 2021, since the door is completely different – changing the car’s overall appearance! These cars have Ajax handbrakes and brakewheels installed. The Milwaukee Road PS-1 9’ door cars include the large, classic “Milwaukee Road” stenciled herald in white on the left side of the car, with the Milwaukee Road herald located on the right side of the car. The roof was left unpainted (galvanized) but includes red overspray, just like the prototype did.
