Is It Sciatica… or Could It Be Piriformis Syndrome? 🤔
Pain shooting from your buttock down the back of your leg is often labeled “sciatica”—but here’s something many people don’t realize:
Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
One of the most common causes we see in the clinic is piriformis syndrome. The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the glutes that helps rotate and stabilize your hip. When it becomes tight, inflamed, or goes into spasm, it can compress or irritate the sciatic nerve, creating symptoms that closely mimic a herniated disc.
Common signs of piriformis syndrome include:
✔️ Pain deep in one buttock
✔️ Burning or tingling down the back of the leg
✔️ Increased pain after sitting for long periods
✔️ Discomfort when climbing stairs, squatting, or getting out of a car
✔️ Relief when the muscle is released
The good news? Many cases respond extremely well to targeted massage therapy.
At Massage & Bodywork of Athens, we don’t just massage where it hurts. We assess the muscles and movement patterns that may be contributing to the problem. Treatment often includes:
• Focused work on the piriformis and surrounding glute muscles
• Myofascial release to reduce tissue restrictions
• Trigger point therapy to decrease muscle tension
• Work on the hip flexors, hamstrings, and low back when they’re contributing to the issue
• Recommendations for stretches and movement strategies to help keep symptoms from returning
If your pain is being caused by muscle compression rather than a spinal issue, releasing the piriformis can often decrease pressure on the sciatic nerve and improve mobility.
⚠️ Keep in mind that not all sciatica is muscular. Herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and other conditions can also irritate the sciatic nerve. If you’re experiencing significant weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, or numbness in the groin area, seek immediate medical attention.
Don’t ignore pain that keeps you from walking, exercising, or simply enjoying life. Finding the source of the problem is the first step toward lasting relief.
📅 We’re open 7 days a week with convenient evening appointments available.

What is fascia? 🤔
Fascia is one of the most overlooked—and most important—tissues in the human body.
It is a continuous, three-dimensional network of connective tissue composed primarily of collagen, elastin, water, and specialized cells called fibroblasts. Rather than simply “wrapping” muscles, fascia forms an interconnected matrix that surrounds and links every muscle, tendon, nerve, blood vessel, bone, and organ from head to toe.
Think of it as the body’s internal support system.
When fascia is healthy, it is:
✔️ Strong yet flexible
✔️ Well hydrated
✔️ Able to glide smoothly between layers of tissue
✔️ Efficient at transmitting force throughout the body
But after injury, repetitive movement, prolonged sitting, stress, surgery, or inactivity, the properties of fascia can change.
Research has shown that fascial tissue can become:
• Less hydrated
• Stiffer
• Less able to glide
• More densely cross-linked with collagen
• Rich in myofibroblasts—cells capable of increasing tissue tension
These changes may contribute to pain, reduced mobility, altered movement patterns, and even increased energy expenditure during movement.
Even more fascinating, fascia is densely innervated with sensory receptors. Studies have demonstrated that fascial tissue contains mechanoreceptors, proprioceptors, and free nerve endings, making it one of the body’s largest sensory organs. In fact, some researchers believe fascia may play a greater role in pain perception than muscle tissue itself.
Manual therapy—including myofascial techniques and therapeutic massage—may help:
✔️ Improve fascial glide between tissue layers
✔️ Increase local circulation
✔️ Reduce nervous system sensitivity
✔️ Improve range of motion
✔️ Decrease pain
✔️ Enhance body awareness and movement efficiency
While massage doesn’t “break up scar tissue” or permanently reshape fascia as is sometimes claimed online, growing evidence suggests it can positively influence tissue hydration, mechanical behavior, and the nervous system’s perception of pain—leading to meaningful improvements in how you move and feel.

Moving can be a massive strain on the body, especially if you’re doing any heavy lifting.
Be sure to protect yourself by:
-Using dollies, carts, and lifting straps to reduce the strain on your body
-Don’t overburden yourself. If you’re not sure you can lift something by yourself, don’t! Ask for help whenever necessary.
-Take breaks! It’s hot and humid out there. Fuel and hydrate well, and rest when necessary.
-Book a massage to relieve tension afterward 💆♀️
Even when you’re lifting safely and doing what’s best for your body, moving is a tough process. So when it’s all said and done and your body is telling you it isn’t happy, let us know. We’re open 7-days a week to accommodate situations just like this 😊

What is fascia?
Fascia is your body’s connective tissue “web”—a continuous, three-dimensional network that surrounds, supports, and connects every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, and organ. Rather than functioning as separate parts, your body moves as one integrated system because of fascia.
Over time, everyday life can affect the health of this tissue. Prolonged sitting, repetitive movements, poor posture, stress, injury, surgery, and even a lack of regular movement can cause fascia to become less mobile. When this happens, you may notice stiffness, restricted movement, tension, or aches that don’t seem to go away.
Healthy fascia thrives on movement, hydration, and gentle loading. Massage therapy helps restore mobility by addressing restrictions in both the fascia and the muscles beneath it. The goal isn’t to “break up knots” or “unstick” tissue, but to encourage healthier movement, improve tissue glide, reduce discomfort, and help your body move more freely.
Many people don’t realize how much tension they’ve been carrying until it’s gone.
If you’ve been dealing with chronic tightness, limited range of motion, or pain that just won’t quit, it may be time to experience the difference that focused, therapeutic massage can make.
At Massage and Bodywork of Athens, we don’t just help you relax—we help you move better, feel better, and get back to doing the things you love. 💚

😂 Getting older is weird…
Nobody warns you that your 30s, 40s, and 50s don’t magically make you feel like an adult. You still laugh at immature jokes. You still have random hobbies. You still think you’re 25…
…until you sleep wrong.
Or sneeze too hard.
Or turn your head to check your blind spot and realize your entire upper back has filed a formal complaint. 😅
The good news? Getting older doesn’t have to mean accepting constant stiffness, headaches, aching shoulders, or a neck that only turns 45 degrees.
Those “normal” aches and pains are often your body’s way of saying it needs some attention—not that you’re just getting old.
At Massage and Bodywork of Athens, we help people move better, hurt less, and get back to doing the things they love. Whether you’re dealing with desk-job tension, workout soreness, old injuries, stress, or just the mileage that comes with life, our therapists focus on finding the source of the problem—not just helping you relax.
Because aging is inevitable…
Feeling stiff all the time doesn’t have to be!
