Happy Juneteenth,
There are some things you can only understand if you lived them.
The sound of beads hitting your shoulders.
Sitting between somebody’s knees on a Saturday.
Hot comb smoke curling through the kitchen.
Getting lost in the beauty supply store.
Essence magazines on the table before you were old enough to read them.
Being a Black woman is one of my favorite things about me.
I’d choose it in every lifetime.
