This weekend Rex played tuba in concert with the Austin Brass Collective Youth The Austin Brass Collective at Bates Recital Hall at UT. 🎺 The Austin Brass Collective is a group of professional brass musicians who perform across Central Texas and are committed to teaching the next generation. Through their youth program, talented student musicians rehearse with the pros, get section coaching on their own instrument, and sit right beside them to grow as players.

Playing under the guidance of professional musicians in Bates Recital Hall, one of the most beautiful halls in Texas, is amazing. So is being surrounded by the history of the Longhorn Band, the “Showband of the Southwest,” which has been making music on the Forty Acres since 1900. That’s 126 years of tradition. 🧡

Great morning at the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual Meeting Texas Society Plastic Surgeons in Houston. I was invited by the hosts to present two Hot Topics talks: the early clinical experience with Junera as its Chief Medical Officer of ONYXA Medical, and as a Clinical Advisory Board member for the leading South Korean aesthetics company Hugel Aesthetics, I spoke about the evolving neurotoxin market and how Letybo scientifically, and on a molecular basis, can fit competitively into that. Thanks to my fellow panelists for a strong session and great discussion! 🎤

Bonus this trip: my son Houston came along as my travel buddy, with his friend Mari. Houston in Houston. 🤠

One of the highlights today for me was having Dr. Jim Stuzin as our keynote speaker. He has been such an important part of aesthetic surgery education and of the Baker Gordon legacy, which began in 1967 and just concluded its 60th and final meeting this year. 🎓

“Technique is subservient to aesthetic destination.”, his ending slide says. In other words, the technique is the tool — the aesthetic result is the destination.

And hearing him talk about Dr. Sherrell Jerone Aston, my facelift surgeon (and mentor!) — I’m 9 weeks post-op in these pics — and reference him as delivering one of the best results he’s seen in the 60-year history of Baker Gordon made me proud! ☺️

Off duty in Crete! 🇬🇷

Podium in the morning, Aegean in the afternoon. After a few days of presenting, moderating and talking technology, it was pretty nice to trade the meeting room for the beach. ☀️🌊

Innovations in Plastic Surgery

✈️🇬🇷 Chicago to Munich on Lufthansa tonight on the way to speak to an international audience of aesthetic surgeons in Greece.

But today I’ve also been thinking about Gloria Steinem, who passed away today at 92.

I briefly met Gloria Steinem years ago when I was living in New York City. We happened to be having dinner at the same Midtown restaurant — she was at the table next to us with some of her friends. She was very kind, attractive and gracious. I thought it was so cool being in the same room as her! 🤓

Seeing her photo today made me think about how much has changed for women during her lifetime. And it made me wonder: would we be where we are today without women like Gloria? She was an organizer and activist who helped sustain the women’s movement through the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st, through battles over reproductive rights, economic equality, and many other issues that affect the lives of millions of women. Ms. Steinem became a symbol of second-wave feminism — the expansion of the movement beyond women’s suffrage into a broader campaign for equality in the workplace, in the home and under the law.

I had first learned and read about her as an undergrad at The University of Texas in my Women’s Studies liberal arts class that I found to be really memorable and formative as I moved on from UT. I’m particularly aware of that when I look back at my own path — from being a young woman with big dreams, to having the opportunity to do amazing things like I am doing tonight, and to the privilege of leading the largest and most respected organization of aesthetic plastic surgeons in the U.S. after becoming its first female president, to being one of the first female chief medical officers (if not the first) of an aesthetic technology company in the country.
