Haitian Flag Day is celebrated every year on May 18 to honor the creation of the Haitian flag and Haiti’s fight for independence from France.

The holiday traces back to 1803 during the Haitian Revolution, when revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines is said to have removed the white stripe from the French flag, leaving the blue and red colors to symbolize unity between Black Haitians and mixed-race Haitians. Catherine Flon reportedly sewed the first Haitian flag together.

Today, Haitians around the world celebrate by honoring Haitian history, pride, and resilience !
Happy Haitian Flag Day 🩵🇭🇹

Haiti is more than a place, it is a living history of resistance and self-determination. Born from the courage of those who fought for freedom, its spirit continues through every generation that carries its language, traditions, and identity forward, even across borders. 🇭🇹

We honor the complexity of that identity through balance of holding onto heritage while navigating new spaces, the pride in where we come from, and the responsibility of preserving it for those who come next.

At Very Fortunat, we recognize that Haitian culture is not only something to celebrate, but something to protect, uplift, and intentionally pass on. 🩵🩵
