Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium that infects the stomach lining and can cause chronic inflammation, gastritis, and peptic ulcers. Black seed (Nigella sativa) contains thymoquinone, a compound with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey also contains natural antibacterial substances, including hydrogen peroxide and polyphenols. Researchers have investigated whether combining these two ingredients could help fight H. pylori and relieve digestive symptoms.
In a pilot study published in the Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal, researchers tested a combination of 6 grams of ground black seed and 12 grams of honey daily in patients with confirmed H. pylori infections. Participants consumed the mixture three times daily after meals for two weeks, without antibiotics or acid-suppressing medications. Of the 14 patients who completed the study, 8 (57.1%) tested negative for H. pylori four weeks after treatment ended. Digestive symptoms also improved significantly, with median indigestion scores dropping from 5.5 to 1 (p = 0.005), including improvements in upper abdominal discomfort, burning sensations, and fullness after meals.
