What in the actual….

I’ve caused quite a few jump scares this week, so I figured I should explain what’s actually going on with my face!

I’m treating severe sun damage and actinic keratoses (AKs)—also called precancerous skin changes—under the direction of my dermatologist.

And yes… this is what people lovingly refer to as “chemo cream.” 😬

The medication I’m using is not a cosmetic treatment. There’s some pretty fascinating science happening.

Years of UV exposure can cause mutations in the actual skin cells and when enough of these abnormal cells accumulate, they can form actinic keratoses, which are considered precancerous because some can progress actual skin cancer.
And here’s the part that really got my attention:

The damage isn’t necessarily limited to the spots you can see. That’s why my dermatologist isn’t simply freezing off one or two spots and calling it a day. So why “chemo cream”…Basically, the medication makes it very difficult for those damaged cells to keep replicating—and so they die. Pretty cool stuff. So I guess let’s just bring the message home that SPF is not just about anti-aging— it is cancer prevention. And how lucky are we to have so many cancer preventatives at our fingertips today- tinted, non-tinted, matte, glowy, powder, spray, lotion, etc.
There’s no excuses. Wear the F’ing sunscreen!
