IF YOU CAN’T PRONOUNCE IT, DON’T PUT IT ON YOUR BODY… RIGHT? 🤔
Actually… no.
One of the biggest misconceptions in “clean” beauty is that an ingredient with a long, scientific-sounding name must be harsh or toxic.
As a DIY formulator, I work with ingredients that sometimes sound downright terrifying on a label. 😂 But an INCI name—the standardized name used on cosmetic ingredient labels—doesn't tell you whether something is safe, gentle, naturally derived, or appropriate for your hair or skin.
🌿 Hydroxyethylcellulose
Sounds like industrial chemistry. It's a cellulose-derived ingredient I use to create beautiful gel textures.
🥥 Decyl Glucoside
Sounds complicated. It's a mild surfactant made from glucose and fatty alcohols, commonly from plant-derived sources.
🧴 Cetyl Alcohol
“ALCOHOL?!” 😱
Not the drying alcohol you may be thinking of. Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol used to give conditioners their creamy texture, slip and softness.
🥥 Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Another mouthful. It's a widely used surfactant commonly manufactured from coconut-derived fatty acids and other components. Processing doesn't automatically make an ingredient “bad.”
🌀 Polyquaternium-55
This one sounds particularly intimidating! It's a styling polymer we use in Scilia Curl Sculpting Gel to help give curls flexible hold and humidity resistance.
Here's the important part:
“Natural” isn't automatically safe.
“Synthetic” isn't automatically harmful.
And “chemical-sounding” isn't a measure of toxicity.
Everything is chemistry.
What matters is what the ingredient is, why it's in the formula, how much is used, its safety data, and how the finished product is formulated.
That's one reason I'm passionate about showing you what goes on behind the scenes at Pantry Pixie and Scilia Hair. I don't want you to fear an ingredient because you can't pronounce it.
I want you to understand it. 🧪🌿🌀
