They drove up from Michigan for a hair appointment and somehow left with a whole moment.

My little brother finally got to sit in my chair in my own salon, and his friend trusted me with his first set of braids.

After I finished their hair, I looked at them and was like… yeah, we’re taking pictures.

Nothing was really planned beyond that.

Just good hair, a camera, and two people I wanted to remember exactly like this.

I think that’s why I love having both hair and photography under one roof. Sometimes the best part of the appointment is what happens after the mirror 🩵💙

These two women will always hold a special place in my heart. 🤍

Fun Fact: My Great Grandma and my Great Aunt Patsy were actually the very first curl cuts I ever did.

During this trip home to St. Croix, I had the honor of caring for their hair again.

My Great Grandma shared something with me that stayed on my heart. After some health challenges, she lost alot of her hair. With the help of my Grandma, aunt and a holistic approach—nourishing her body from the inside out and using natural oils—her hair grew back thicker than ever. But it came back differently. Instead of the coils she'd known most of her life, her hair grew in coarser with more of a wave, and she was saddened by that change—Convinced her hair is straight now.

As hairstylists, we can't always bring back someone's old curl pattern. But we can help them embrace the one they have today. I added soft layers to remove weight, and little by little, her natural texture came to life again. Seeing her smile afterward reminded me that sometimes it's not about chasing the past—it's about learning to love the hair that's with us now.

Moments like these are why I do what I do. Hair is deeply personal. It carries our stories, our health, our memories, and our resilience.

Looking back, it's kind of fitting that my very first curl cuts were on the women who taught me so much about love, strength, and family.

She came in for the Essence Curl Cut Session — a full curl reset designed to care for the hair, scalp, and spirit.

We added more layers this time to give her curls extra shape, volume, and movement, then followed with clarifying, scalp care, deep conditioning, and steam with aromatherapy for relaxation. While her treatment processed, we added a gentle aloe vera mask for her sensitive skin.

Then we finished with soft, natural makeup — just enough to enhance, not cover.

It was her first time getting her makeup done, and the sweetest part was seeing how much she enjoyed the whole experience.

Healthy curls, soft glam, and a reminder that self-care can start young. 🌿✨

So adorable! Her parents brought her in for a consultation, went over her routine, products, and concerns. Her goal is to grow her hair long and healthy and to embrace her natural beauty, so we did a cut to get rid of all of the dead ends and shape her hair. We also did a hard water treatment to remove buildup, and defined her beautiful curls 🌀
