Happy Birthday to the legendary, Doug Nelson!
The inspiration behind The NELSON Center, as well as President of Bodywork Associates!
Not only is Doug an incredible educator and clinician, his heart to serve is truly at the forefront of all he does. Being able to call Doug a friend, collaborator and mentor enriches our lives both professionally and personally.
Thank you Doug for being who you are and Happy Birthday!
Are you checking in with clients after your session? When working with specific pain issues results can vary.
A change in symptoms immediately during a session is incredibly valuable. This lets us know, we can make change. - aka. Hope!
What is also important is what happens 2-3 days post session. This is the determining factor for our treatment effectiveness and how we proceed with future sessions.
To all the therapists out there, follow up for your clients is extremely valuable - and often humbling. But it is vital to your clients as well as a development opportunity for you!
“Just let go” isn’t an easy task for many clients. Especially those dealing with pain. What really drives that regulation for clients? Safety.
Doug and TNC mentees sat down to discuss the realities of what is FIRST needed to help clients feel at ease during sessions, to really create change for clients.
What would it take for massage therapy to become
something people feel confident seeking out earlier?
More education?
Better communication?
Knowing when we can help and when we should refer?

Does your healthcare provider do this?
Stay curious.
Sometimes what we think is happening… isn’t.
As PNMT practitioners we’re not attached to a technique, a routine, or even our first idea.
We reassess. We reason. We adapt.
Because the goal isn’t to be right.
The goal is to help you.

Two people can have the same complaint and need completely different approaches.
Two people can both say:
“My lower back hurts.”
But that doesn't mean their bodies are experiencing the same thing.
Their anatomy is different.
Their movement is different.
Their history is different.
Their tissue may be responding differently.
Their contributing factors may be different.
That's why we don't believe in treating people like identical problems on an assembly line.
The person matters.
And that's one reason precision matters.

Your body doesn't come with separate departments.
Your shoulder doesn't know it's supposed to operate independently from your neck.
Your hip doesn't exist in isolation from the rest of your body.
Your muscles, connective tissues, joints, nerves, and movement patterns all exist within a larger system.
That's why looking only at the place where you feel pain can sometimes leave important questions unanswered.
At the Nelson Center, we look beyond the obvious.
Because sometimes understanding the relationship between structures is just as important as understanding the structures themselves.

Pain and dysfunction aren't necessarily the same thing.
Pain is an experience.
Dysfunction describes something that's not working as it should.
The two can exist together—but understanding the difference matters.
Someone can experience pain without having an obvious movement problem.
Someone else may have significant dysfunction without experiencing much pain at all.
That's one reason the Nelson Center doesn't reduce every client to a painful body part.
We want to understand the bigger picture.
Where does it hurt?
What isn't functioning well?
What tissues may be involved?
What does the body tell us when we assess it?
Those questions help guide a more precise approach.

“My muscles are so tight.”
We hear this all the time.
But here's something worth considering:
Feeling tight doesn't necessarily tell you exactly what is happening within the tissue.
Your experience of tightness is real.
But the reason you're experiencing it may be more complicated than simply needing to “stretch more.”
That's why a precise understanding of anatomy, tissue, movement, and dysfunction matters.
Sometimes the most useful question isn't:
“How do I loosen this?”
It's:
“Why does this feel tight in the first place?”
That's a much more interesting question.

The place that hurts isn't always the whole story.
Your shoulder hurts.
Naturally, you think:
“My shoulder is the problem.”
Your hip hurts.
You think:
“My hip is the problem.”
Your neck hurts.
You think:
“My neck is the problem.”
But the body doesn't operate as a collection of isolated parts.
The tissues surrounding an area can influence how it moves and functions.
That's why understanding pain and dysfunction requires more than simply asking:
“Where does it hurt?”
A better question can be:
“What else might be involved?”
That's where assessment and precision become important.
