A lot of people tell me, “Hair loss runs in my family, so there isn’t anything I can do.”
That belief causes people to give up before they’ve ever asked the right questions.
Yes, genetics matter. But genetics are only one piece of the puzzle.
As a functional trichologist, I’m interested in understanding why those genes are being expressed now. What’s happening with inflammation? Blood sugar? Hormones? Nutrient status? Stress? Immune function? Gut health?
Those answers often reveal opportunities to support healthier hair—not because we’re changing your DNA, but because we’re changing the environment your hair follicles live in.
Your family history may explain your risk. It doesn’t automatically determine your outcome.
👇🏾Have you ever been told your hair loss is “just genetic”? I’d love to hear your experience.

Hey y’all hey 👋🏽.
This version of me didn’t happen overnight.
I’ve had seasons where I questioned myself.
Seasons where I stayed too long.
Seasons where I had to start over.
But every season taught me something the next version of me needed.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that becoming isn’t glamorous—it’s intentional.

How many times have you been told your hair loss is “just stress” “genetics” or “just getting older”
Those explanations might be part of the story, but they shouldn’t be the end of it.
Your hair doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s influenced by your hormones, metabolism, nutrition, immune system, gut health, stress, medications, sleep, and so much more.
If all we’re doing is managing the symptom without asking why it’s happening, we may be missing the bigger picture.
Don’t settle for symptom management when there may be more to discover.
Because understanding your hair starts with understanding your body.
💬 What’s one answer you’ve been given about your hair that never fully made sense to you?

I’ve actually been to the top of the Empire State Building…
But don’t worry—I stayed inside the observation deck. 😂
You’ll never catch me climbing onto the antenna.
That’s what imagination (and a little AI) is for.
But if I could plant a flag at the top, this is exactly what it would say:
Your hair isn’t the problem.
Your body is trying to tell you something.
That’s what The Hair Mayven stands for.
We don’t chase symptoms.
We investigate the why.
We restore from within.
We build long-term hair health.
Because healthy hair doesn’t start at your scalp.
It starts with your health.
🏴 Welcome to a different way of thinking about hair loss.

Breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated.
This morning’s plate:
🥚 Eggs for protein
🥑 Avocado for healthy fats and fiber
🥓 Turkey Bacon
🍞 Sourdough Toast
🍐 Half a pear for additional fiber
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is focusing only on calories while ignoring nutrients. Protein, healthy fats, and fiber work together to support blood sugar balance, energy, satiety, and overall health.
Your hair doesn’t just respond to what you put on your scalp. It responds to what you put on your plate.
Hair follows the health of the body.

You can spend hundreds on hair vitamins.
You can buy the red light cap.
You can apply every oil on the market.
But if your body isn’t sleeping, it isn’t repairing.
One of the things I look at in women struggling with hair loss is sleep.
Not because sleep causes every hair loss case.
But because poor sleep impacts nearly every system involved in healthy hair growth:
⚠️ Thyroid function
⚠️ Adrenal function
⚠️ Hormone balance
⚠️ Gut repair
⚠️ Immune regulation
⚠️ Hair growth
Read that again.
One problem.
Six systems.
I’ve worked with women who were chasing ferritin, hormones, biotin, collagen, and expensive treatments while sleeping 5-6 hours a night, waking up exhausted, and wondering why their hair wasn’t responding.
Your body does most of its repair work while you’re sleeping.
If you’re waking up between 1-3 AM…
If you’re not waking up feeling restored…
If you’ve been running on fumes for years…
Your hair may be trying to tell you something bigger.
How many hours of sleep are you getting each night?

I get it.
When you hear something long enough from enough people, you begin to believe it’s true.
“Hair loss runs in my family.”
“My dad went bald, so I guess I will too.”
“It’s genetic. There’s nothing I can do.”
But let’s talk about the truth behind androgenetic alopecia.
Yes, genetics can play a role.
But genetics are not a life sentence.
Your genes may create a predisposition, but they do not guarantee the outcome.
What many people don’t realize is that androgenetic alopecia is often influenced by factors far beyond your DNA, including: Insulin resistance, Chronic inflammation, Poor circulation, Nutrient deficiencies, Hormonal imbalances, Stress, Metabolic dysfunction
Think of it this way:
Your genetics may load the gun, but your environment and lifestyle determine whether the trigger gets pulled.
As a Functional Trichologist, I’ve worked with men who were told their hair loss was simply “genetic,” only to uncover underlying health imbalances that needed attention.
The question isn’t just “What genes did you inherit?”
The question is: “What is your body trying to tell you?”
And no, you don’t have to simply accept going bald without investigating what’s happening beneath the surface.

I can’t let this month end without celebrating 20 years as a licensed cosmetologist. From the days of ATEC going to two blocks of cosmetology from my 11th and 12th grade year to graduating from cosmetology school 3 days before my high school graduation to 19 years behind the chair. I set a goal years ago that I would do 20 years and retire, but that retirement came a few months early and I am not mad at it. I had every intention to get back behind the chair when I moved at the end of December early Jan, but I told God I want to go all the way in with Trichology so here I am today walking fully into my purpose. My passion runs deep in the beauty and now wellness industry and I am blessed to have had a fulfilling and sustaining career over the new years. Cheers 🥂 to a new chapter and a new version of Stephanie the Functional Trichologist 😘

The biggest mistake I see? Waiting.
Many women assume a receding hairline is normal aging when it may actually be FFA—a form of scarring alopecia that can cause permanent hair loss.
The earlier you identify what’s happening, the more options you may have.
If you’ve noticed your hairline moving back, thinning eyebrows, itching, burning, or scalp discomfort, it’s time to investigate.
Hair loss is information. Don’t ignore the message.
