Saturday afternoons at Dr. Wax 20+ years ago were a ritual. Music lovers, artists, and DJs digging through bins, searching for what was next. Duane was my guy. Whether it was one of his custom mixes or a stack of albums he said we needed, you didn’t question it. Duane’s musical taste was gospel, and we didn’t blaspheme.
Today, he teaches music history and DJs around the world, still preserving and sharing the music and culture that shaped so many of us.
Dr. Wax is about honoring that history while the people who made it are still here to receive their flowers.
Proud to share this moment with a friend, a living archive, and a Chicago music icon.

Dr. Wax, Memoir’s first candle, launches this Thursday at Recycled Modern.
Inspired by Hyde Park’s legendary Dr. Wax record store, once located just steps from Recycled Modern in Harper Court, we’re bringing the story full circle with an evening of music, culture, and community.
On the decks: Dr. Wax’s very own, the iconic Duane Powell, with opening sets by Latte Baby and Smoove.
Crate digging with Beverly Phono Mart. Limited-edition Dr. Wax tees and stickers. And, of course, the first chance to experience Dr. Wax in candle form.
It’s also the final night of the Harper Court Music Series, and the weather is looking beautiful.
