Vermont is the first state in the U.S. to ban paraquat, a pesticide that is banned in many other developed countries.

Gov. Phil Scott signed a state bill into law in May that bans the use or sale of paraquat starting Nov. 1.

Studies have linked paraquat to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that is on the rise. People who apply paraquat are more than twice as likely to develop Parkinson’s.

Nationwide, about 11 to 17 million pounds of paraquat are sprayed annually, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) introduced legislation this week to protect Americans’ access to homeopathic medicine by building a new regulatory framework at the FDA.

The Homeopathic Drug Product Safety, Quality, and Transparency Act, co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), would create a separate pathway for homeopathic products to gain FDA approval without forcing them through the same process designed for traditional pharmaceuticals.

Recent laboratory research on the ethanolic mother tincture of Phytolacca decandra shows it selectively induces apoptosis in A375 melanoma cells. Treated cells exhibited elevated reactive oxygen species, DNA fragmentation, down-regulation of Akt and Bcl-2, and activation of p53, Bax and caspase-3 pathways — leading to programmed cell death and reduced proliferation — while normal peripheral blood cells remained largely unaffected. These findings add to the growing body of evidence on targeted homeopathic approaches in oncology.
