An Ode to Iris + Ornament

I feel like flowers are nature’s way of smiling at us.

The more time I spend observing them, the more parallels I find between their lives and ours.

For many years, I thought of autumn as a season of decay. Lately, my perspective has been shifting. I’m beginning to see it more as a season of maturity. A time when the fullness of what has been growing becomes visible, when we gather what we’ve cultivated, and begin the slow transition toward rest.

After spending so many years away from the four seasons, I’ve been feeling particularly moved by the opportunity to rediscover something so familiar.

This summer, it was the iris that kept finding me.

Its beauty, grace, elegance, and strange resilience seemed to speak to something I was already contemplating.

When my grandmother passed, I inherited a painting of irises that she made herself. Not long after, I started noticing them everywhere.

In gardens. Along sidewalks. In photographs. In passing.

It felt as though I had been given a new way of seeing something that had always been there.

These five designs grew out of that feeling: the iris as flower, memory, ornament, and symbol of transformation.

A small study in noticing what is blooming, what is becoming mature, and what we are learning to carry forward.

This is part of a larger 3/4 arm sleeve Victoria and I have been collaborating on for almost a year now.

Within this project I view myself as the humble channel for this deep and personal work that reflects raíces, cultura, and tradiciones beyond my own understanding.
