A cross necklace was fine. A Hawaiian lei was not. That is what happened at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista California on the day Sophia Benzon was supposed to graduate.
Her family is Pacific Islander. The lei is not jewelry. It is not decoration. It is tradition passed down through generations. Every single member of her family who graduated from this exact school wore one. Her own siblings walked across the same stage wearing leis and nobody said a word.
But when it was Sophia's turn staff pulled her aside minutes before the ceremony and said take them off or you are not walking.
Her father showed up and fought for her. Told them the principal already approved it. Told them this was not a dress code issue this was a cultural one. Staff apologized but did not move.
