As we celebrate Pride Month, it’s worth remembering a piece of Columbus history.

When Columbus held its first Pride march in 1981, only a few hundred people participated. Some concealed their identities because being seen could put their jobs, housing, relationships, and safety at risk.

Today, Pride is one of the largest community celebrations in our city, thanks to the courage of those who came before us and chose to stand up, speak out, and create space for others.

Many of the freedoms we enjoy today were made possible by people who were willing to be seen when it wasn’t safe, popular, or easy.

Happy Pride, Columbus. 🌈❤️

It serves as a reminder of both the struggles endured and the progress achieved, while encouraging us to continue learning from our nation’s history. Understanding the past helps us build a more informed and thoughtful future.
