I am so grateful to have a sister who pushed me, and who accepted me always in all my radiance. We would fight and bicker about anything-but one thing she never did was pick on me for having a deeper shade. Now I find all demographics like and enjoy having non dry skin and nourished hair. Why Did I start my brand Rich Garden? This is the story behind my WHY:

“You know Cantu is owned by a white man?”

“GURL. WHAT?!” I stared at her…my mouth agape. Norita my older sister just casually dropped that bomb in the kitchen. She dispelled the belief that many black sounding brands were white people too. Es un engaño. And that made me enraged. It’s black hair care products! And white people are profiting who are not as invested in our health. We deserve products with no harmful ingredients that “might,” produce cancer. We deserve to have natural remedies to our beautiful manes and I don’t like the harmful messages young black girls and woman receive about their hair and skin! It feels like they motivated by profit but not care.

I too, fell into that inferiority trap. Even though I’ve been natural almost all my life and love my deep radient skin…the systemic racism and exclusion in the US for black beauty was difficult. It started to drive me mad. My people and my lineage are beautiful. It's been generations of telling us we "can't" or "aren't enough." Or not deserving of protection. I can't stand that. Radient, deep hues are pretty. Just as pretty as anybody else. White people are not the enemy, but the industry of making my melanated community feel less than is. Some of these hair extensions and hair ingredients have been linked to cause cancer. Being bombarded with Eurocentric beauty standards that make you break bank when you just working class or poor is deliberate and systematic. I just wanted to learn to have pride in my skin and natural crown in low moments when the stress of double consciousness in the USA became too much. I wanted something natural, something black owned, something that made my community-my excellent beautiful community-feel included and empowered. My sister was the one who pushed me to do my own thing. I couldn't believe Cantu was owned by a white man! I said you know what! I will do my own thing.

I was reading, “My Hair is a Harden,” on the Libby public library app and from that the brand was born. The colors and the original recipe are credited to the original author who helped me nourish my strands, empower my mind, and glow my skin…naturally.
