🐝👑 National Honey Bee Awareness Month — Throwback to August 2021! 👑🐝

Since August is National Honey Bee Awareness Month, I'm pulling this one out of the archives! This video is from August 2021 and shows the process of marking a queen bee.

So why do beekeepers put that tiny colored dot on their queens?

A healthy colony can contain tens of thousands of bees, so that little mark makes the queen MUCH easier to find during a hive inspection. 👀🐝 But visibility isn't the only reason we do it!

👑 Queen marking can also help us keep track of what's happening inside the colony.

If I know my queen is marked and later inspect the hive and find an unmarked queen, that's a pretty big clue that I'm no longer looking at the same queen. The colony may have replaced—or superseded—their previous queen.

Basically, the bees sometimes make their own management decisions without consulting the beekeeper. 😂🐝

The color of the mark also means something. Beekeepers traditionally use an international five-color system based on the last digit of the year the queen was born or introduced:

🤍 White: years ending in 1 or 6
💛 Yellow: years ending in 2 or 7
❤️ Red: years ending in 3 or 8
💚 Green: years ending in 4 or 9
💙 Blue: years ending in 0 or 5

Since this video was taken in 2021, the traditional marking color was WHITE. 🤍👑

That tiny dot can therefore tell us quite a bit at a glance—there's my queen, approximately how old is she, and is she still the same queen I previously had?

The mark itself is carefully placed on the queen's thorax using a small amount of appropriate marking paint or a queen-marking pen.

Five years later and I still think it's pretty amazing how much there is to learn from these tiny creatures. 🐝💛

Tomorrow is another hospice volunteer visit. 🤍

I choose to volunteer in hospice because this kind of care is needed. Sometimes there is nothing to fix and nothing that needs to be said. Sometimes what matters most is simply having another person willing to show up with gentleness, compassion, and care.

For me, hospice massage isn't about doing more. It's about meeting someone exactly where they are — offering comforting touch, a quiet presence, and human connection during a deeply vulnerable season of life.

Every assignment is different. Every person is different. And every visit is a reminder that even when we cannot change what someone is facing, we can still choose to bring comfort into the moment.

After an amazing Fall 2025 and two wonderful Spring series in 2025 & 2026, I’m excited to get back outside and see what this fall has waiting for us! 🍄🐝🦋🐦

These aren’t your typical nature walks. Walking with Purpose is about slowing down and actually noticing what’s around us. We take our time exploring our local community while identifying and learning about the plants, trees, mushrooms, birds, insects, pollinators, wildlife, and more that we discover along the way.

🌿 The purpose?
Slow down. Learn. Connect with nature. Connect with community. And develop a deeper appreciation for the world right outside our doors.
