For some hirsute clients, the growth of rich, thick hair is accompanied by overactive sebaceous glands that cause acne and pore blockage. These clients will have more effective treatments if their pores are relaxed and open, so consider recommending changes to their daily cleansing regimen to help reduce the oil on their skin and the blockage and inflammation it can cause.

For those unfamiliar with Anna Pauline "Pauli" Murray, her life is a storied list of firsts. Here are a few:
§ 1944: graduated first in a class of all male students from Howard Law School
§ 1950: published ""States' Laws on Race and Color"", called the ""bible"" of the civil rights movement by later Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshal
§ 1956: hired by NYC law firm where she is the only non-male lawyer on staff and argued for civil rights and women's rights
§ 1961: appointed by President John F. Kennedy to Presidential Commission on the Status of Women Committee on Civil and Political Rights where she works with A. Phillip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, and Martin L. King Jr.
§ 1965: is the first African-American to receive the JSD from Yale University
§ 1966: is one of the founding members of the National Organization for Women (NOW)
§ 1977: becomes the first African American to be ordained by the Protestant Episcopal Church
§ 2012: Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray is posthumously elevated to sainthood and included in Book of Holy Women, Holy Men by General Convention of the Episcopal Church
In reflecting on her career, Rev. Murray said, "In not a single one of [my] little campaigns was I victorious. In other words, in each case, I personally failed, but I have lived to see the thesis upon which I was operating vindicated. And what I very often say is that I’ve lived to see my lost causes found." To better reflect current science and improve patient care, a team of researchers and healthcare providers has endorsed changing the name of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This change recognizes that PMOS is a complex, long-term hormonal or endocrine disorder rather than a single-symptom condition having to do with the presence of extra "cysts" in a biological woman's ovaries.

It is believed that at least 1 in 8 women worldwide have PMOS, but not everyone with PMOS develops ovarian cysts, resulting in missed diagnoses and inadequate treatment for the condition's broader metabolic and hormonal effects:
+ “Polyendocrine” recognizes that multiple hormone systems are involved—not just reproductive hormones
+ “Metabolic” highlights the condition's significant impact on metabolism, including insulin resistance and increased diabetes and cardiovascular risk
+ “Ovarian” acknowledges the ovarian component

We've been loving this series from Instantronics on the how to best choose and use sunscreen- thanks, Instantronics!

How much? Sunscreen won't work if it's not applied correctly. USE AT LEAST ONE OUNCE OF SUNSCREEN (the amount that would fill a standard shotglass) TO ADEQUATELY COVER THE FACE AND BODY of an average-sized adult. Experts have found that people typically apply about one-third to one-half the amount of sunscreen used by laboratories to test a product's SPF (sun protection factor) effectiveness. In other words, you won't get the promised results on a sunscreen's label if you only use half of the amount needed for proper skin coverage.

When to apply? Reapply? Initial sunscreen application should be done at least 20 minutes before going outdoors so that the sunscreen will be fully absorbed. And once applied, sunscreen only lasts so long on our skin. The sun's rays break down some sunscreens while others clump and lose their effectiveness. Here's when to reapply:
*For standard sunscreens, reapplication should happen after sweating, after being in water, and/or after toweling off.
*For Water Resistant sunscreens: reapply after 40 minutes in the water.
*For Very Water Resistant sunscreens: reapply after 80 minutes in the water.
*For ALL sunscreens, reapplication should happen at least every 2 hours. (This includes water resistant and very water resistant sunscreens when not being in the water.)

What body parts get skipped? Don’t forget these commonly missed spots during your sun-protection routine:
*Armpits
*Back of hands, knees, neck
*Ears and lips (use a lip balm with SPF protection)
*Top of head where the hair is parted
*Top of feet
*Under swimsuit edges and bathing suit straps

And...? Consider these additional tips:
*Wear a broad-brimmed hat
*As much as possible, stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., peak UV exposure time
*Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and other clothes that offer sun protection
*Protect your eyes from cataract-causing UV radiation by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays
