HERB OF THE DAY!

Let's talk about Mullein!

🌿 History of Mullein

Mullein, most commonly referring to Verbascum thapsus, is a tall flowering plant with soft, fuzzy leaves and yellow flowers. It has a long history in traditional herbal practices in Europe, the Mediterranean, and later North America.

🏺 Ancient History

Mullein has been used for centuries as a medicinal and practical plant. Ancient Greek and Roman writers described plants in the Verbascum family and their uses. Traditional herbalists valued mullein particularly for preparations involving the respiratory system, throat, and skin.

The plant was also used practically. Because its tall flower stalk can reach several feet high, dried stalks were sometimes used as torches, with the stalk coated in flammable materials.

🌿 Medieval Europe

During the Middle Ages, mullein became established in European herbal traditions. Herbalists commonly prepared the leaves and flowers as teas, infusions, oils, and other preparations.

Mullein was traditionally associated with soothing irritated tissues, particularly the throat and respiratory passages. Mullein-infused oil was also traditionally used externally for the ears and skin.

🌎 Arrival in North America

European settlers introduced common mullein to North America. It spread readily and became naturalized in many regions.

Native American communities subsequently incorporated various mullein preparations into some traditional herbal practices, although uses differed considerably among tribes and regions.

🌱 Mullein Today

Today, mullein remains popular among herbalists and people interested in traditional plant-based wellness. The leaves and flowers are commonly found in herbal teas, tinctures, and infused oils.

Mullein's historical reputation is especially connected with:

🌿 Traditional respiratory and throat support
🌼 Herbal teas and infusions
🫙 Infused oils for traditional external use
🌱 Traditional skin-soothing preparations

HERB OF THE DAY!

ELDERBERRY🪻

Let's talk about it!

🌿 History of Elderberry

Elderberry comes primarily from species of the Sambucus genus, especially European black elder (Sambucus nigra). It has a long history in traditional food and herbal practices across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia.

🏺 Ancient History

Elder trees were valued by ancient European cultures for their berries, flowers, and other parts of the plant. Historical herbal traditions used elder preparations for a variety of everyday ailments, including colds, respiratory complaints, inflammation, and digestive problems.

The plant also developed a strong place in European folklore. Elder trees were sometimes regarded as protective plants and were associated with household and spiritual traditions.

🌿 Medieval Herbal Medicine

During the Middle Ages, European herbalists commonly used elder flowers and berries in traditional preparations. Elderflower was particularly popular in teas and other preparations, while elderberries were made into foods, wines, preserves, and medicinal syrups.

🍯 Elderberry Syrup

Over generations, people developed preparations such as elderberry syrup, often combining cooked elderberries with ingredients such as honey, ginger, or spices. These preparations were traditionally taken during the colder months.

🧪 Elderberry Today

Modern research has investigated elderberry primarily for its antioxidant compounds and possible effects on symptoms of respiratory infections.

P.S. Elderberry is one of my top 5 favorite herb! I have created my own handmade elderberry syrup with a herbal blend! I swear by the benefits, over the past 3 years this is all I give my daughter from an infant to now and she is 3 years old. She lovesss it lol. Definitely is great for boosting the immune system! Safe for all ages.
