Your roots and your ends may be part of the same head of hair, but they can behave very differently when it comes to color.
Fresh regrowth, previous color, highlights, porosity, and years of wear can all change how the hair absorbs and holds pigment. That’s why customized formulas matter — especially when porous ends can sometimes grab too dark, look uneven, or fade faster than expected.
In my newest Color Me Beautiful | The Cut by Kim Journal post, I’m sharing why I often use different formulas from roots to ends, how I color balance with demi-permanent color, and why porosity plays such a big role in the final result.

There’s just something about fresh highlights before heading back to school. 💇♀️📚 Whether it’s a subtle refresh, brighter blonde, or soft dimension, the goal is hair that feels fresh, natural, and still completely you.
I loved creating these highlights for this beautiful teen — bright, blended, and easy to grow out as the school year gets busy. 🤍
If you’ve been thinking about a back-to-school refresh, now is a great time to get on my schedule!

Your roots and your ends may be on the same head… but they’re definitely not the same canvas. 🤍
Fresh regrowth, previously colored mids, porous ends, grey coverage, old highlights — every area of the hair can react differently to color. That’s exactly why I rarely believe in a one-formula-fits-all approach.
In my newest Color Me Beautiful | The Cut by Kim Journal post, I’m breaking down why different areas of your hair may need different formulas, why porous ends can sometimes grab too dark or fade too quickly, and how customized color balancing can make such a difference.

Could it actually be damage—not just dryness?
If your hair feels soft after conditioning but still:
• Breaks easily
• Feels weak when wet
• Stretches too much or snaps
• Has split ends that keep coming back
• Won’t hold a style the way it used to
…then the problem may be deeper than moisture.
True damage affects the structure of the hair, which means another mask can make it feel better temporarily—but it may not be enough to rebuild strength.
That’s when I start thinking about repair first, then softness.
In my studio, I use K18 and Olaplex because they support different parts of damaged hair, and I can also combine them with moisture when the hair needs a more complete reset.
✨ K18 treatment add-on: $50
✨ K18 + Olaplex + moisture treatment: $100

Soft hair isn’t always healthy hair. Strength matters too.

Do your ends feel dry again almost immediately after conditioning? Does your hair dry very quickly, tangle easily, frizz fast, or seem to lose color sooner than it should?
That can be a sign of high porosity.
Porous hair absorbs moisture easily—but has trouble holding onto it. The goal isn’t just to keep adding more conditioner. It’s to help support the cuticle, protect the hair, balance moisture with strength, and repair damage when needed.

Does your hair feel heavy, dull, greasy faster than usual, or like your products just sit on top instead of working?
You may be dealing with buildup from styling products, oils, dry shampoo, hard-water minerals, chlorine, or environmental residue.
Sometimes the answer isn’t another mask. Sometimes your hair needs a reset first.
A proper clarifying or chelating routine can remove what’s coating the hair so your moisture and repair products can actually do their job.

Before you buy another mask, oil, or shampoo, there may be something else going on.
Buildup. Porosity. Damage. Hard-water minerals. Even changes in your hair itself can completely change how your favorite products perform.

We took her from uneven warmth and grown-out color to a much more blended blonde with:
🤍 Brighter, cleaner ends
🤍 Softer dimension through the root
🤍 A more seamless transition from dark to light
🤍 Added shine and a smoother, healthier-looking finish
What I love most is that it’s still her blonde — just more balanced, intentional, and beautifully blended.
Healthy-looking blonde isn’t just about getting lighter. It’s about placement, tone, condition, and creating a result that grows out beautifully.
