It’s been 4 years and it’s gone by in what feels like an INSTANT. In August of 2022 🎂 I opened my business. It started with a room, a bed, just a couple products and a single, literally BARE retail cabinet.

I didn’t know what to call myself yet, so I thought Esthetics by Pilar will do! 🤔 I was still finding myself, the direction, I made some mistakes along the way but learned exactly what I wanted longterm as a result. This business has taught me resilience 💪 , how to slow down, shown me humility, connected me with some incredible people and an immense amount of growth as a woman and an Esthetician.

Now, it’s evolved — into Skin Therapy Gig Harbor. A name I feel exemplifies the foundation and mission of my business. I am excited to see what year 5 has in store 🥰

🚨 Important take — sometimes it’s not JUST what we in the treatment room, but also the ability to OUTSOURCE when we feel appropriate and to spot certain skin conditions. For this virtual client 📱 , upon her sending this photo I assessed this as fungal acne - a yeast overgrowth in the follicle. I immediately suggested she look into an over the counter anti-fungal cream to apply daily. 🗓️ 6 days later, we are bone smooth! I don’t recommend this for long term use which is why a supporting regimen to help keep this from being triggered again is key 🔑.

🤎 Fungal acne (more of an acne imposter) is very common in the forehead specifically for a few reasons. Skin and scalp oils, hair products and films, heat 🔥 and moisture 💦 all get trapped from constant friction and often times bangs and hair style are a contributing factor. Over exfoliation can also disrupt healthy bacteria content and the skin barrier. When treating this I also ask my clients to pause sugary 🍬 treats and things that can feed the yeast, keep the area as dry as possible and discontinue their aggressive exfoliants like peel pads and toner until the flare as ceased. Now we can get back to basics and keep her bacteria biome balanced, in that California weather! ☀️
