This October, Stefanie and I are celebrating 22 years of sharing non-toxic head to toe necessities. 22 years ago, I made the decision to partner with Heidi Leist (owner and founder) and I still love my decision today.

Here’s a little backstory from all those years ago ~

Fun Fact #1: Lemongrass Spa was originally in our owner's basement in
Bailey Colorado and when I was deciding if this company was going to
be a good fit for me (or not), I asked to meet face to face with the owner, Heidi.

You see, I had worked with over 45 supervisors and managers in Human Resources on the East Coast and knew that whoever was at the top of the company sets the entire tone. We all know this to be true.

I'm the kind of person that devotes my whole heart to my work and so
whoever that person was mattered a great deal.

I drove to Bailey to meet with our owner at her kitchen table and I had prepared about 32 questions to ask her (which makes me giggle today), but maybe asked about twelve to fourteen total that day. In hindsight, I was interviewing her to get a heart-check about who she was and her level of integrity and I had a good gut-feeling about all those things in that first meeting.

We sat around the kitchen table and I heard about her vision for the
company and how she decided to offer the products within the direct
sales model vs. the store-shelf (retail) model so that she could offer
pure ingredients (leaving out all the harsh preservatives) —AND -- most importantly--so that she could make a
financial difference in her consultant's lives. She had studied the
direct sales model for a year and knew that it could have the biggest
impact on individuals. WOW!

I was happy to sign that sheet of paper,
joining Heidi's team and becoming the 57th person to say 'yes' to
starting their Lemongrass Spa journey.

You see, a CEO who had a vision
right from the beginning to create a business model that would impact
others made a big impact on me.

We did not have many fancy tools 22 years ago and even faxed (or
mailed) in our customer orders since it was long before our websites
existed. I helped write a section of the original consultant manual
and helped however I could because I had linked my passion with
Heidi's passion and it was of huge importance to me to get safe and
natural products into other's hands and help them understand why
natural & organic ingredients matter so much. I was on a mission to
share with those I loved and all those I would have the opportunity to
meet about cutting out chemicals from head-to-toe.

After signing the paperwork, we walked downstairs to the basement
production area and together, we packed up my consultant kit from the
products that were neatly arranged on steel baker's shelves. The
basement was still a big part of the family's home so I remember a
piano being in that room and some weights as well. It was truly
ground-floor 22 years ago and the opportunity is still wide open
today, but there are so many tools available today.

I have such sweet memories of driving to Bailey Colorado to pick up big orders
and walking in to the "Lemongrass Headquarters" in the Leist's home.
You could smell what was being crafted that day such as peppermint
bath crystals, lavender lotion or lemon aromas. One day Heidi's mom,
Karen, was crushing rose petals for the Victorian Rose Body Polish and
Karen always was so excited to be part of creating the products with
her hands.

It is a real joy to have these stories from when the company was brand
new and I am just as devoted to our mission today, as we just keep
improving each year. Thanks for reading along and sharing my journey.

Sometimes you have to close a door to open up another one...and that is how we are launching into a new website! Today, our websites are temporarily taking a nap so that Tomorrow (only a day away), we can have our new website up and running.

This made me reflect on my early days with Lemongrass Spa, where I connected with everyone without a website at all. I met incredible women face to face at vendor markets and by offering in home spa experiences with groups of friends. I still love that in person face to face connection and it is truly special. When a group of women get together, there is almost immediate connection and a shedding of the to-do list. That doesn't come natural for us, so I intentionally talk through that release of 'holding on to the to do list' through a series of self care steps.

Sometimes gratitude shows up in what others share with you -- Unexpectedly.

I was waiting for an elevator on one of the last days of conference and was feeling excited about everything, which included:

* Hearing where the next SPA destination trip would be so we could put that on our GOAL board!
* Seeing so many friends and trying to catch up with as many as possible.
* And....just being generally happy to be exactly where I was in that moment.

The other woman (with a corporate job) who was waiting for an elevator was having the exact opposite experience and said, "I cannot wait until my conference is over so I can GET OUT of here. It cannot end fast enough." I immediately felt for her.

It was about a day later that I realized what a GIFT she shared with me. Her words gave me pause and made me so VERY grateful that I get to do work that I love, that I cannot wait to reconnect with my team in person, and attending conference is pure JOY. I am grateful that I found Lemongrass Spa when I did and that I have work that is deeply meaningful to me. More importantly, the team that I am blessed to serve are some of the kindest humans I know and I literally wake up with excitement when the day is finally here to jump on a plane to go and see these women.

Back to the woman waiting for the elevator..... I hope that someday she will also have a group of people that she is excited to see and have work that feels like a mission rather than a j.o.b.
