Why labs matter for **real** weight loss.

Labs don't tell you how to lose weight, but they give a safe baseline and reveal obstacles we can address with training and food. Start with the core tests so your coach and clinician can spot issues like prediabetes, thyroid dysfunction, low vitamin D, or inflammation.

If you're 35 to 70 with overweight or obesity, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, so ask your clinician about HbA1c or fasting glucose. From there, lipids, CMP and TSH complete the core picture.

Want us to walk through your results? Read the full guide on our site or drop a question below — which lab result has confused you most?

Bone is living, remodeling tissue, and a longevity tissue.

After 40, bone mass and microarchitecture change. Perimenopause and menopause may accelerate loss in women. Men lose bone too and are under-screened.

Before prescribing, measure: DEXA density, with T-score/Z-score interpretation by a clinician; fracture-risk assessment; and context labs-25(OH)D, albumin-corrected calcium, PTH, alkaline phosphatase, CTX and P1NP.

Review low body weight, estrogen/testosterone shifts, thyroid disease, celiac or malabsorption, long-term glucocorticoids, chronic PPI use, inactivity, smoking, alcohol and family history.

Training may include progressive resistance, appropriate stomping, hopping, jumping, carries and stairs, plus balance and fall resilience, only where joint and bone status allow. In-home coaching adapts to your staircase, floors and space.

Fuel with adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D and K2, and magnesium: food first. Supplement choices and dosing require clinician oversight.

A DEXA result or lab value is not a diagnosis. No exercise or supplement program guarantees fracture prevention. Bone reflects training, nutrition, hormones, medications and medical history.

Ask your physician whether DEXA and relevant labs make sense, then build your plan around the findings. Buy the DEXA+ scale:

Your plan rarely fails at home. It fails between the early flight, hotel breakfast, catered lunch, client dinner, and late arrival.

Frequent travel makes keeping protein, fiber, and glucose-aware choices consistent a logistics problem, not a knowledge problem.

Before departure: stage portioned chef-prepared meals; book a room with a refrigerator; pack jerky, shelf-stable protein, nuts, high-fiber options, water, and a meal map.

At airports and convenience stores, compare protein per calorie and fiber. Avoid ultra-processed defaults that can disrupt appetite later.

At dinner: protein first, vegetables for volume, sauces on the side, and carbohydrate portions chosen intentionally. Alcohol affects sleep and recovery. Dessert should be deliberate.

Time zones disrupt appetite, sleep, and digestion. Structure helps. Coaches can program hotel or in-room sessions to protect momentum.

Meal delivery supports planning, not medical treatment. If you have a condition or take medication, including GLP-1s, work with a qualified clinician. Posh Fitness does not prescribe or provide clinical advice.

What does a useful meal actually provide? How much does meal timing matter? And when does a supplement solve a real problem instead of adding another bottle to the shelf?

My new book, Nutrition Fundamentals: A Practical Guide to Food, Health, & Performance, is here. Across 33 chapters, it covers nutrition basics, habits and lifestyle, dietary approaches, sports nutrition, personalized nutrition, and supplements, with practical examples, reflection prompts, planning exercises, a glossary, and references.

The goal is to make nutrition easier to understand: what’s well established, what’s still preliminary, and when individual care matters. No hype or promised outcomes, just a practical guide for making more informed choices.

Power, not just strength, is often one of the first qualities to fade after 40.

Research associates aging with steeper losses in peak power and rate of force development than maximal strength. Fast-twitch type II motor-unit changes may contribute; individual responses vary.

Power supports quick chair rises, stumble recovery, catching a falling grandchild, stairs, luggage, and reactions in traffic or on a ski slope.

At home: fast-intent submaximal reps, medicine-ball throws/chest passes, kettlebell swings, band/cable power work, speed step-ups, and, if joints and bone allow, low-amplitude pogo/hop progressions.

We baseline movement and strength, then stage technique, load and speed around joint, tendon and bone status. Coaching, recovery and low-fatigue, high-quality sets matter. We track sit-to-stand, stair ascent, throw distance and timed 10-meter gait speed.

This is not a promise to prevent aging or disease or guarantee performance. Medical clearance may be appropriate.

“Research use only” is not a prescription. It is a warning.

A vial labeled “not for human use” is not a medical product. Buying it and self-administering removes the safeguards clinical care depends on:

• Verified identity, purity, concentration, and sterility
• Testing for endotoxins and particulate contamination
• Correct handling, cold-chain control, and dosing
• Pharmacist review and a documented final product
• Adverse-event reporting and someone to contact when something goes wrong

The risks are real: mislabeled or under-dosed vials, counterfeit or relabeled products, incorrect reconstitution, dosing errors, contamination, and serious infection from nonsterile injectables.

Do not confuse a compounded medication with a research chemical. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality before use. However, they are prepared by licensed pharmacies under a prescription and applicable state or federal oversight, including 503A or 503B frameworks. That is a fundamentally different exposure profile from a gray-market vial.

Legitimate clinical access includes:

A clinician reviewing your history, medications, contraindications, symptoms, and labs. A specific rationale. Informed consent. Quality documentation from a licensed pharmacy. Baseline and follow-up monitoring. Documented reassessment. A clear stop rule.

Tesamorelin/ipamorelin, MOTS-c, and BPC-157/TB500 should only be discussed with a qualified clinician. None guarantees an outcome, and peptides are not DIY tools.

Why does the same cup of coffee wire one person and barely move another? 🧬

COMT encodes catechol-O-methyltransferase, which clears dopamine, especially in the prefrontal cortex. Val158 is associated with faster clearance; Met158 with slower breakdown.

Neither is better. Context matters: a 2021 study found Met carriers performed worse on executive tasks under mild stress while Val homozygotes performed better; when calm, the pattern reversed. A 2012 study found genotype-related working-memory differences under acute stress.

Higher dopamine tone can support focus and drive, or feel wired and overstimulating. Track your own response: stimulant timing, sleep, resting heart rate, HRV, stress, mood, and training. Sleep, aerobic exercise, and stress management matter more than genotype.

A result is context, not a diagnosis or prescription. Never self-prescribe or adjust medication or supplements. Review changes with a qualified clinician, especially with anxiety, sleep problems, or medication use.

The conversation has moved beyond debating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications. The new question is: What tissue comes off: and what stays?

A 2026 meta-analysis of 20 randomized trials found lean mass accounted for about 25–39% of weight lost: semaglutide 35.2%; tirzepatide 25.4%; liraglutide 26.8%; lifestyle 26.2%; lifestyle plus resistance training 17.5% (Eisa & Barood, 2026). Exercise plus liraglutide preserved lean mass better than liraglutide alone in a randomized trial (Lundgren et al., 2021). GLP-1 therapy does not automatically mean muscle wasting; scale weight alone is simply incomplete.

A self-reported analysis of 410,000+ Reddit posts from 67,000+ users found 43.5% reported a side effect; fatigue appeared in 16.7%, and reproductive or menstrual symptoms in about 4%. It is observational and hypothesis-generating: not proof of causation: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/09/260912222856.htm

The precision protocol: measure body composition, not just weight, with a DEXA scan where available; perform progressive resistance training; consume adequate protein; and coordinate medication, nutrition, and bloodwork with the prescribing clinician.

A static list of bacterial names is not the full microbiome story. 🧬

Advanced testing can examine what microbes are doing and which biological pathways are active, not only which organisms are present. RNA-based metatranscriptomic analysis is one approach used to study microbial activity and functional signals. We use for gut health testing.

But data is context, not a diagnosis, and it is not a guaranteed explanation for symptoms or a promise of improved gut health.

A useful interpretation considers the complete picture:

• Nutrition and fiber intake
• Medication history
• Gastrointestinal tolerance
• Sleep quality
• Training load and recovery
• Relevant clinical data and biomarkers

The goal is not to chase a perfect bacterial score. It is to build a practical, individualized roadmap from better information.

POSH coaching helps you interpret health data and turn insights into sustainable nutrition, training, and behavior strategies. We provide practical support, not medical treatment.

Your aging muscle may be changing its identity because its mitochondrial membrane is losing a critical lipid. 🧬

Cardiolipin sits in the inner mitochondrial membrane and supports energy production. A new Nature Aging study found it declines with age in mouse and human muscle.

That decline triggered a glycolytic-to-oxidative fiber switch through ERRγ: a reactive-oxygen-species-sensitive, potentially protective response, not simply damage.

The paradox: aged muscle can look more oxidative on paper while performing worse. More mitochondria-related machinery does not equal better muscle function.

In mice, restoring cardiolipin synthesis improved muscle outcomes and rescued premature mortality. This was mouse work. No human therapy exists for this pathway, and no supplement has been proven to reproduce it.

For adults over 40, the levers we can pull remain practical: aerobic base work, progressive resistance training, adequate protein, sleep, and recovery. Mitochondrial-support supplements are adjuncts guided by measurement, never substitutes.

Mechanism research tells us where to look, not what to buy.
