Ever gone to the general store’s candle isle and thought you hit the jackpot with those $9 15 oz candles? There’s a reason they’re cheap.

1. They use the cheapest wax blend possible (most likely paraffin, but you’d never know because it’s not disclosed. “Natural wax blend” means they don’t want you to know.

2. Cheap, toxic fragrance oils

3. Not made in the USA. Mass-produced overseas

4. And the question you’re all wondering
.what the hell are those little white circles around the wicks?!

They’re called wax plugs, and they’re one of the easiest ways to spot a mass-produced candle.

Many large manufacturers place a small disc of inexpensive, unfragranced wax around the wick before pouring the rest of the candle. Why? Because it reduces the amount of fragranced wax needed in every candle. It may only save a few grams per candle, but across hundreds of thousands of units, those savings add up to millions.

That means the wax closest to your wick—the part that melts first—often contains little to no fragrance. It’s a cost-cutting shortcut designed to increase profit, not performance.

At Upsensed, we pour every candle with one continuous pour of our premium coconut apricot wax. No wax plugs. No filler wax. No shortcuts. Just fragrance from the first burn to the last.

Four things you should know before September 14:

1. The maker: One woman, small batches, hand-poured, an actual human doing an actual happy dance when an order comes through.

2. The wax: Coconut and apricot. Creamy, slow, clean-burning. It performs as good as it looks.

3. The wicks. 100% cotton. No metal core. Steady flame, honest scent throw.

4. The giveback: 5% of every purchase goes to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Lighting a candle is a small act, but what it can make possible isn’t.

Nobody walks in the door and announces that they’re stressed. It shows up quieter than that. Your shoes are still on, the lights are all the way up, phone is still popping off.

Then a match, and a flame, and the room drops half a tone.

That’s the whole thing. It doesn’t have to be a lifestyle overhaul. Ninety seconds can shift how a space feels.

A room can hold a feeling, and scent is how we change it.

This is where all scents were made. Two years ago, it started in a kitchen. Wax in a small starter warmer next to the stove and jars lined up on the counter next to the sink. Everything cleared away before dinner, then dragged back out at nine at night after the kids were asleep.

So many fragrances got built here. Every reformulation, every burn test, every version that didn’t work. This counter saw the whole thing.

At the end of this month, Upsensed moves into its own studio space. It’s will still be in our home, but to have a space specifically dedicated and designed for our little business is such a blessing!

I wanted a photo of it like this first, so my sweet husband took this two years ago because I think a lot of people wait for the “real” space, the “real” setup, the “real” conditions before they start. I didn’t have any of that. I had a stove and an evening.

Save this one. I want to post the “after” right next to it.
What did you start in a kitchen? 👇 Let us know in the comments!

Sneak peek #3 🍂 The Fall Collection is almost here, and this one might be our coziest yet. Can you guess the scent from the crumbs? Our gourmand queens are gonna love this one! 👀

Warm apples simmered soft in cinnamon and brown sugar. This is where the story starts.

Then: melted butter meets deep, sticky toffee cake. This is the layer that makes it feel like dessert.

Introducing Toffee + Apple Butter đŸ•Żïž Warm apple, melted butter, toffee cake, and a whisper of allspice — hand-poured in coconut-apricot wax right here in HTX. Available 9/14 as part of the Fall Collection/official Upsensed launch 🚀

Ten years in nursing, 6 of those in labor and delivery. Rooms where people are frightened, exhausted, elated, or all three inside the same hour, and one of the things I kept noticing had nothing to do with medicine: Smell is the first thing a person registers about a room. Before the lighting. Before anyone says a word.

It happens faster than thought, and it’s already told them something about whether this is a place where they’re okay.

Hospitals know this. It’s why smell gets used on purpose in patient care rather than left to chance. Nobody’s pretending a scent fixes anything, but it shapes the room a person has to be in while the hard part happens, and that turns out to matter more than you’d guess.

You cannot talk someone into feeling calm. I’ve tried
. hundreds of times. What you CAN do is change the room and the energy around them, and let the room do some of the work. That’s the whole idea behind Upsensed. Not that a candle solves anything: That the space you’re in should support how you’re trying to feel — and scent is the fastest lever you have on that.

The spaces we live in should support how we feel. I learned that at work, long before I learned to pour wax.
Follow along. We’re pouring toward September 14.

Not every fall scent smells like pumpkin.

Some smell like crisp bay leaf beneath towering pines. Bright bergamot carried on cool air. Cedarwood and dried to***co lingering long after sunset.

Meet Dusk + Pine — the second fragrance in our Fall Collection.

Fresh. Woodsy. Unexpected.

Arriving alongside the Upsensed official launch 9/14 đŸȘŸ
