This client is wearing three bundles of our Raw Cambodian Hair — one 18” and two 20” bundles, customized with subtle highlights through the bang and face-framing layers for dimension and movement.

But this appointment wasn’t only about the finished style.

She has experienced postpartum and hormonal shedding, which can present as increased shedding and a noticeable decrease in overall density. Postpartum shedding commonly occurs as hormone levels shift after pregnancy and more follicles enter the resting/shedding phase at the same time. While this type of shedding is often temporary, persistent or worsening changes in density deserve a closer look—especially when other scalp concerns are present.

She was also recently diagnosed with eczema, with irritation affecting the scalp and nape area. Eczema can cause dryness, itching, inflammation, flaking and increased sensitivity. Scratching and ongoing inflammation can also contribute to breakage and make an already compromised area more difficult to manage.

Her salon care is customized accordingly. I focus on gentle cleansing, scalp hydration, minimizing unnecessary tension and irritation, soothing treatments such as aloe vera when appropriate, controlled steam/hydrotherapy, and professional conditioning treatments to support the scalp barrier and maintain the integrity of her natural hair. These services are supportive—not a replacement for treatment prescribed by her dermatologist.

And yes, she can still wear beautiful extensions. The installation simply has to respect the scalp, current density, vulnerable areas and amount of weight the natural hair can safely support.

Wheew! What a year !

For those who are new here, I’m Jasmine M. Spencer, Licensed Cosmetologist and Certified Clinical Trichologist, with more than 16 years of experience behind the chair.

I specialize in healthy hair care, hair and scalp restoration, precision cutting, silk presses, protective styling, extensions, and customized care for women experiencing hair loss and scalp concerns.

Clients travel from different cities and states for the one-on-one attention, privacy, education, professional products, quality care, and customized experience they receive at Jazzie Hair Studio. My goal is for every client to leave with healthier hair, a better understanding of her hair and scalp, beautiful results, and renewed confidence.

As we move into fall, consistency becomes even more important. Dryness, itching and flaking may become more noticeable, while conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis can flare for some individuals. When scalp inflammation and certain disorders are left unmanaged, continued irritation can contribute to shedding, breakage and changes in density over time.

Beautiful hair is still the goal, but the foundation matters just as much as the finish.

A traditional install was not a suitable option for her.

We created a partial weave designed to provide fullness, movement and coverage while minimizing unnecessary stress on the compromised areas.

Healthy hair doesn’t have to look the same for every client.

My client wears a combination of natural and relaxed hair. She chooses to relax only the nape area for manageability while the remainder of her hair stays natural.

For dimension, we highlight her hair using Level 7 permanent color—and we only do this twice a year . The goal is never to continuously process the hair just because we can. Chemical services should be customized around the condition of the hair, the desired style and maintaining its integrity long term.

Her longer bixie is finished with heavy layers, a sweeping bang and lots of movement, while her grown-out highlights and natural gray add beautiful dimension.

Beautiful hair starts with understanding what’s happening underneath it.

My client has a diagnosed inflammatory scalp condition. During her appointment, there was visible inflammation and significant scaling throughout the scalp.

When a dermatologist has prescribed products to manage a scalp condition, consistency matters. Without proper management, inflammation, itching, irritation and scaling can persist or worsen. This is why I always encourage my clients to follow the treatment plan provided by their medical professional rather than simply treating visible flakes as “dry scalp.”

Before we ever started her install, the scalp came first.

I carefully lifted the adherent scaling with a professional flake-lifting tool, followed with an appropriate scalp solution, hydrotherapy, deep conditioning and a trim.

Then I customized her protective style around what her scalp and natural hair needed—paying close attention to tension, braid placement, coverage and accessibility.

For her finished look, she is wearing 2½ bundles of our Premium Raw Cambodian Hair with a 5×5 lace closure.

This is what trichology has added to my work.

I still love beautiful hair. I still love a flawless install. But now I’m looking beyond what you see when you leave my chair.

Natural hair isn’t the only definition of healthy hair.

For some women, transitioning from natural to relaxed hair simply works better for their lifestyle. Short relaxed hair can be sexy, youthful, sophisticated, low-maintenance and incredibly versatile.

My client is now 5 months into her short relaxed style and still LOVING it.

She also manages seborrheic dermatitis, an inflammatory scalp condition that can cause flaking, itching and irritation. So while maintaining her beautiful style is important, managing scalp inflammation is equally important.

We’re intentional about proper relaxer application, avoiding unnecessary chemical exposure to the scalp, routine cleansing, conditioning, scalp care and following her dermatologist-directed treatment when needed.

Having a scalp condition doesn’t mean you have to give up beautiful hair. It means we have to be more intentional about how we care for it.

The goal isn’t to convince every woman to wear her hair natural.

The goal is to help her maintain the healthiest version of the hair she chooses to wear.

A protective style is only protective when the technique protects the hair underneath it.

This client has traction alopecia, so her Smoothing Treatment Quick Weave was customized with a braid-down pattern and installation technique designed to provide coverage while minimizing unnecessary tension on vulnerable areas.

With proper care, this style can typically be worn for 4–6 weeks. But proper removal is just as important as the installation. Pulling, rushing through adhesive removal, or improperly taking down extensions can cause breakage and place additional stress on already compromised follicles.

Beautiful extensions should never come at the expense of healthy hair.
