Hi, my name is Joana… and I’m a recovering loyalty addict.

I thank God He removed the desire to build community with people simply because we shared history.

I used to think my community had to be made up of my cousins… my childhood friends… the people I went to middle school with… high school… college… or the people I’d known the longest. I thought history was enough to keep a relationship alive.

It wasn’t.

God had to teach me the difference between history and alignment. Just because someone was meant for one season of your life doesn’t mean they’re meant for every season.

We understand seasons when it comes to fruit. Some fruit is sweetest in its season. Outside of that season, it doesn’t taste the same because it wasn’t meant to.

Relationships are no different.

I still love people. I still wish them well. But I no longer force closeness out of guilt, nostalgia, or loyalty. My community is built around people who are growing in the same direction, celebrate each other without competition, and show up with the same energy they hope to receive.

Recovery looks good on me. 🖤
