Why Type 2, 3, and 4 Curls Need to Be Cut Differently ✂️✨

Not all curls are the same—and that’s exactly why cutting curly hair requires a completely different approach than straight hair. Curl patterns range from soft waves to tight coils, and each type behaves differently when it’s dry, styled, and lived in. When curls are cut incorrectly, the results can be uneven shape, frizz, loss of definition, or curls that simply won’t cooperate.

At a professional curly-focused salon, we cut curls based on how they naturally exist—not how they behave when stretched or blown out.

Type 2: Wavy Hair (Loose S-Shaped Waves 🌊)

Type 2 hair often looks straight at the root with waves forming through the mid-lengths and ends. The biggest mistake with wavy hair is over-layering or cutting it like straight hair.

Type 3: Curly Hair (Defined Spirals 💫)

Type 3 curls have more bounce and spring, which means shrinkage becomes a factor. If cut incorrectly when wet or stretched, curls can spring up unevenly once dry.

Type 4: Coily / Kinky Hair (Tight Curls & Coils 🌀)

Type 4 hair has the most shrinkage and the most delicate curl structure. Cutting it like other hair types can remove too much length or disrupt the curl pattern entirely.

The Bottom Line

Your curl pattern is unique, and your haircut should be too. The right technique transforms curls from frustrating to effortless.

If you’ve ever left a salon feeling like your curls were misunderstood, chances are they were cut using straight-hair techniques. Curly hair deserves a specialist who understands the science and artistry behind it. 💇‍♀️🌿
