Do you like popping pimples? Here is a technique using Q-Tips that is safe and prevents you from scarring your skin.
⚠️ While removing the sebum plug and debris speeds up healing, how you do it matters.
1. Make sure you are in a clean room. Do not pop pimples in the car or in public bathrooms.
2. Pull the hair out of the face. Wash your entire skin or spot wash. Use a gentle cleanser or witch hazel w/out alcohol. Wash your hands as well. During this step, I like to massage the skin and massage around the pimples. Please know that neck pimples are more difficult to pop.
3. Use clean tools like Q-tips and gauze. Do not press the pimple with your fingers or nails.
4. Look for pimples that "look" ready to be expressed. Not all pimples can be expressed. Usually, the ready ones will have a white or yellow head, and they will be easy to remove. By using the Q-Tips you will gently express the pimple without hurting the skin. Always be kind to your skin.
4. Press on the base of the pimple. 🌋 I think of a little volcano, and I press at the base of the volcano.
5. Do not scrape or scratch the skin. Be gentle, and if the pimple does not come out easily, let it be. It might be ready the next day, or it might go away on its own.
6. You are trying to remove the sebum plug, so the area can heal faster. Once the plug is removed stop. Do not draw blood.
7. If any pimples bleed, after removal, apply gentle pressure on top.
8. Wash the entire face, or the spot, at the end.
⚠️ Manual scrubbing or harsh chemical exfoliants on an open, freshly popped pimple will severely damage the fragile new skin tissue, resulting in worse scarring. Instead, a safe wound-healing routine is: Keep it clean: Wash gently with gentle soap and water to naturally float away loose debris. Keep it moist: Apply a thin layer of an occlusive ointment like petrolatum jelly, face oil, or collagen/scar tape. A moist wound helps the body to heal better. Do not use a pimple patch, acids or benzoyl peroxide. These products are caustic to the skin.
