Caitlin came to me after she’s had a negative experience with another makeup artist (sadly, an all too true reality for women of color). She expressed that she wanted something soft, Bridgerton-inspired as her whole wedding day had touches from the popular series, and yet she still wanted to feel like herself. My response “I understand the assignment my love, let’s do it 🫡”

We worked together to find a look that was both beautiful and long-lasting, not to mention perfectly complementary for her facial features specifically—a tailored look that made her feel confident!! We actually changed from a golden/bronzey toned look that we did at her Bridal Preview to this rosey, monochromatic pink look on wedding day because Caitlin trusted me (I knew she’d love it! This was a deeply emotional piece for me to write and rewrite. I’m so moved by the dive lord my younger self would have for where I am now. She was so alone, so sad, and so beautiful but she just didn’t see it yet.

Approaching 30 I’m so honored to have been my younger self once. The trials & heartache she went through built the foundation of who I am today—as a mother, as an artist, as a business owner.

Lil Rachel, I love you so much. You are so worthy. You are so important. You are so beautiful. Keep surrounding yourself with those who show up for—those are your people and together you will build something so unbelievable amazing 🫶🏻

My Makeup Journey Part 2 (see previous post)

When I met my husband, I started to realize the human capacity for love, for change, for adventure and newness. His desire to be more and do more, constantly learning and seeing the positive in life sparked an equally driven passion in myself to do what I love. But, this was all happening subconsciously for me. I wasn’t actively aware of the transformation he was having on my heart and mind until years later.

In the moment, or at least as I recollect it, I was falling in love with him, sure, but I had no idea that with that love would come the development of a growth mindset.

Alright, so where does the makeup come in, right?

Well, as crazy as it sounds, it was a fleeting, silly little thought that I woke up with one morning in early March 2020 after being told not to come to work for the time being (you all remember the world sort of pausing in March 2020). The thought was literally: “I am sort of bored, why don’t I learn how to wear makeup?”

I’d basically run out of activities to pass the time since I wasn’t working and thought that maybe playing with makeup would be fun.

And truly, as simple as it sounds, I set out to Ulta, spent $150 on items I had no idea how to use, and returned to bury myself deep into the Instagram and YouTube rabbit holes of “how to put on makeup”.

What began as a silly lil idea to learn to wear makeup both in uniform (I was still in the military) and when I went out, became a 5-6 hour daily ritual that helped me therapeutically process both what was happening in the world amidst the pandemic (and I mean so much more than just COVID-19, if you can remember just how divided & sad America began to be), my own person struggles with self-love & confidence, and, of course, deeply question what I wanted to do with my life & how I wanted to show up in the world post-pandemic.

I like to write & I’m once again out of space, I suppose part 3 coming soon…
