A retwist does more than make your locs look neat—it helps create a supportive base for the weight of each loc.

As your hair grows, the weight of the loc is supported by the loose new growth attached to your scalp. Without regular maintenance to keep that new growth organized and evenly distributed, the weight of the loc continues pulling on individual hair strands. Over time, those strands can become overstressed and eventually break away from the loc.

When those strands break away, fewer hairs are left supporting the same weight. That extra stress is now concentrated on a smaller number of strands, which can weigh down on the scalp and gradually lead to thinning at the base of the loc.

This doesn’t mean everyone needs frequent retwists. Your ideal maintenance schedule depends on your hair’s growth rate, density, texture, and the maturity of your locs. For some people, once or twice a year works. For others, waiting that long can increase the risk of thinning and breakage.

Healthy locs aren’t about following someone else’s timeline—they’re about giving your hair the maintenance it needs. ✨
