Gray blending 2.0

This is my furthest traveling client- she lives in the San Francisco area and has been my client for over twenty five years!

Through the years when she searched for new hairstylists out West they all wanted to do what THEY WANTED, not what SHE WANTED. She was never unreasonable, she wanted what she wanted and that’s that. It’s really that simple.

Normally, I see her three to four times a year, at this last appointment it had been nine months since her last visit. NINE MONTHS!

Honestly, if you look at the before pictures, her regrowth doesn’t look that bad considering the amount of time between appointments.

And the biggest reason for that is “babylights”. They are tedious and time consuming, but the reward at the end is SO worth it!

She’s good to go for another 3-4 months now!

We began this transformation at the end of my day, by the time I finished up, it was getting dark and unfortunately, the light in my room does not always portray how beautiful the hair color looks, and the natural light outside (which I prefer) was almost gone. 😭

This beautiful client had gone elsewhere for her first ever highlights/balayage and unfortunately the outcome did not look anything like the inspiration photos that she had shown her previous hairstylist. 🤦🏻‍♂️

She had nine months of regrowth and alot of bad ends, she also has very wiry course naturally curly hair.  All of this can be a very daunting task, but I just remind myself throughout the entire process that there’s nothing more important than these few hours. 🙌🏻

Personally, I think we moved mountains during her first 2 1/2 hour visit and this time when she left a salon, there were no tears! 🥳

Have you heard of “gray blending”? Let me give you a shining example…

She’s 30 years old, has beautiful dark brown hair, but…she’s getting some grays here and there.

She doesn’t want to commit to permanent hair color or even demi permanent hair color.

She has always been a VERY low maintenance client and wants to continue being low maintenance until she can’t.

Ultimately we decided on gray blending- it softens the natural dark brown color which had little to no natural highlights, it blends and camouflages her grays and gives her the low maintenance upkeep she’s always loved while giving her beautiful dimension and some texture.

I REALLY wish I had taken a before picture, but we both were so excited for the outcome I completely forgot. 😆

No filters.
No ring light.
No assistants.
No extensions.
No bleach.
No gloss.
No gimmicks.

Just good old fashioned hard work.

In May 2024 I started photographing my clients journey of growing out her hair color to her natural beautiful gray color.

She was in no hurry and wanted to embrace all the stages of her grow out.

To our surprise it wasn’t that bad and honestly it looked pretty darn good throughout the entire process.

It’s definitely not ideal for the impatient and there are several avenues you can take in this process, but this worked well for her and we both couldn’t be happier with the final outcome.

This started in May 2024 and the final beautiful outcome was this past February 2025.
