DAY 8 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know stress isn’t automatically the cause of alopecia areata?

A person may remember experiencing intense stress before hair loss, but stress is not considered the direct cause of alopecia areata. (American Academy of Dermatology)

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

Stop telling people, “You just need to relax.”

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

Listen. Don’t blame.

DAY 7 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know children can experience alopecia too?

A child dealing with hair loss may also face questions, teasing, bullying or feelings of being different.

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

Children need understanding—not embarrassment.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

💜 Teach children kindness.
💜 Stop bullying when you see it.
💜 Encourage confidence.
💜 Never make fun of someone’s appearance.

DAY 6 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know alopecia areata can cause eyebrow and eyelash loss—not just scalp hair loss?

Some people may also lose hair on other parts of the body. (American Academy of Dermatology)

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

Hair loss can affect much more than the top of someone’s head.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

Don’t minimize someone’s experience because they still have some hair.

Every person’s journey is different.

DAY 5 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know hair loss isn’t contagious?

You cannot “catch” alopecia from another person. (American Academy of Dermatology)

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

There is no reason to avoid, isolate or treat someone differently because they have alopecia.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

💜 Be comfortable around them.
💜 Don’t stare.
💜 Don’t whisper.
💜 Don’t make assumptions.

Compassion costs nothing.

DAY 4 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know there are many different types and causes of hair loss?

Alopecia areata is only one type.

Hair loss can also be associated with hereditary hair loss, traction alopecia, scarring alopecia, hormonal changes, thyroid disease, nutritional deficiencies, illness, medications and cancer treatment. (American Academy of Dermatology)

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

Don’t assume you know WHY someone’s hair is falling out.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

Ask instead of assuming.

DAY 3 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know alopecia can affect people of all ages, genders and racial/ethnic backgrounds?

Alopecia areata can begin during childhood or later in life. (NAAF)

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

Don’t assume alopecia has a certain “look.”

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

See the person—not just the hair loss.

💜 Include them.
💜 Listen to them.
💜 Learn from them.
💜 Treat them with dignity.

DAY 2 — DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease?

The immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss.

It can affect the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and other areas of the body.

AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW…

Don’t tell someone with alopecia, “It’s just hair.”

For them, the experience may be much bigger than hair.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

💜 Ask how they’re doing.
💜 Respect their feelings.
💜 Don’t make their hair loss the punchline of a joke.
💜 Be supportive instead of judgmental.
