THE PALISHED POST 🗞️
Beauty, Skin & Everything In Between
Your Skin Barrier Is Begging You to Leave It Alone
Because sometimes your skincare routine is actually the problem.
Okay, we need to talk.
Somewhere along the way, skincare became a competition to see how many products we could fit on one bathroom counter.
Cleanser. Toner. Exfoliating pads. Vitamin C. Retinol. Glycolic acid. Salicylic acid. A random serum TikTok told you would change your life. And then another exfoliant… because apparently the first three weren't enough. 😂
Meanwhile, your skin is sitting there like:
“Girl. PLEASE.”
If your products suddenly sting, your face feels tight after cleansing, you're experiencing unusual dryness or flaking, or your skin seems irritated no matter what you put on it…
Your skin barrier might be asking you to leave it alone.
First Things First: What Is Your Skin Barrier?
Think of your skin barrier as your skin's security system.
Its job is to help keep moisture in and irritants out.
When that barrier is functioning properly, your skin is better able to protect itself and maintain hydration.
But when we repeatedly over-exfoliate, use harsh products, introduce too many active ingredients at once, or constantly switch products because somebody online told us we needed something new…
That protective barrier can become disrupted.
And no, sis—
Burning does not automatically mean it's working. 😭
Your Skin May Be Asking for Help If…
You may notice:
- Products you've used before suddenly sting or burn
- Your skin feels unusually tight after cleansing
- Increased dryness or flaking
- Redness or irritation
- Increased sensitivity
- Your skin feels uncomfortable even after moisturizing
- You keep adding products, but somehow your skin seems to be getting worse
Now here's where I need my hyperpigmentation girlies especially those of us with melanated skin to listen up. 👀
Irritation + Melanin Can Be a Messy Combination
When your skin experiences inflammation or injury, it can respond by producing excess pigment.
That's one reason we can develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or those dark marks that hang around after acne, irritation, picking, burns, or other inflammation.
Which means aggressively trying to get rid of a dark spot can sometimes contribute to the very cycle you're trying to stop.
You see the spot.
You exfoliate harder.
Your skin becomes irritated.
The inflammation contributes to more discoloration.
You see more discoloration.
So you exfoliate AGAIN.
Baby…
PUT. THE. EXFOLIANT. DOWN. 😭😂
We are not fighting dark spots by declaring war on your entire face.
Sometimes, Less Really Is More.
When your skin is irritated, this may not be the time to introduce another brightening serum or add another acid.
Sometimes your routine needs to become boring for a little while.
And boring skincare can be GOOD skincare.
That may mean getting back to the basics:
Gentle cleansing.
Moisture.
Barrier support.
Daily sun protection.
Consistency.
Then, once your skin is calm and healthy enough, targeted treatments can be introduced thoughtfully instead of throwing everything at your face at once.
And Please Stop Changing Your Entire Routine Every Week. 😂
Skincare takes time.
If you're constantly introducing new products, removing products, changing cleansers, adding actives, and trying every viral recommendation you see, it becomes difficult to know what's actually helping—or what's causing the problem.
And somebody else's holy-grail product isn't automatically your holy-grail product.
Your skin has its own needs.
That's why skincare should be intentional, not reactive.
Your Skin Doesn't Need to Be Punished Into Behaving.
I think that's one of the biggest things I want my clients and anybody reading The Palished Post to understand.
Healthy skin isn't about having the strongest routine.
It isn't about owning the most products.
And it definitely isn't about making your face burn because somebody convinced you that discomfort equals results.
Sometimes your skin needs treatment.
Sometimes it needs correction.
And sometimes?
It needs you to stop fighting it and let it heal.
If you're dealing with persistent burning, swelling, severe irritation, a rash, or skin that isn't improving after simplifying your routine, that's also your sign to stop experimenting at home and talk with a dermatologist or another appropriate healthcare professional.
Because knowing when to treat and when to support is part of taking care of your skin intentionally.
Your skin talks.
We just have to learn how to listen.
Until the next Post,
Stay consistent. Stay Palished. 🤎

Heyyy, I’m Alicia
the face behind Palished Beauty. 🤎✨
If you’re new here, welcome! I’m a licensed esthetician and the owner of Palished Beauty Skin & Spa, where beauty meets intention.
I created Palished because I wanted skincare to feel different — especially for women who wanted a space where they could feel comfortable, understood, cared for, and still get real results.
Around here, we’re big on healthy skin, consistency, education and creating an experience that feels personal to YOU. Whether you’re coming in for your first facial, working through hyperpigmentation, maintaining your glow, getting waxed, or simply taking an hour to pour back into yourself — there’s a place for you here.
And just so you know… I’m not the super quiet, clinical “okay, see you in four weeks” esthetician. 😂 We might talk skincare, business, motherhood, relationships, life — or you might knock completely out on my table. Either one is perfectly acceptable.
Palished Beauty has grown into so much more than I originally imagined, and I'm so grateful you're here to experience this chapter with me.
So if you're new here, introduce yourself in the comments! 👇🏾
Tell me your name + your #1 skin concern right now.
And if you've been watching the page wondering whether it's time to book…
This is your sign. 🤎
