I almost said no.

When Ellie from Pure Wax Studio called about renting the upstairs space, I wasn't exactly thrilled about bringing in someone who offered some of the same services we do. I had practically written her off when she said, “Can I at least see the space? It’s such a cool building.” Well… she was right.

What had been a grimy, dated office space (thanks to a tenant who left after 10+ years and skipped out on the rent 🙃) became something completely different once Ellie and her husband Tyler got ahold of it. New drywall, new floors, and a total reimagining. It now feels like a modern little treehouse flooded with light.

Two years later, we’ve gained far more than tenants. We swap clients, swap ideas, and somehow rope Ellie, Tyler, and Uncle Paul into our crazy projects too. They care for this building like it’s their own, and we’re lucky to have them.

Turns out the best neighbors are the ones you almost said no to. ❤️

Hair Studio has been evolving for a lot longer than most people realize.

The oldest part of our building dates back to 1890, when it was built as a simple two-flat home. One of my favorite pieces of history is a 1933 photograph of Adeline Johnson standing in front of the house, holding her daughter Doris, long before anyone could have imagined a salon would someday occupy the space.

In 1955, an addition transformed the property into a bustling neighborhood hub, with a dentist office upstairs, Gitter's Pharmacy on the main floor, and Indra's Glenway Barber Shop in the basement.

From the outside, you might never guess that parts of Hair Studio are 136 years old, but the original basement tells a different story. The old stone foundation and hand-hewn beams are still there, quietly preserving generations of memories.

As we celebrate Hair Studio's 40th anniversary, we're honoring not just the business, but the building and the people who came before us. We feel incredibly lucky to be the current caretakers of this little piece of Madison history.

We bought the business and the building, and trust me, those are two very separate jobs. Saturdays may say "Closed" on the door, but behind the scenes there's always something to fix, trim, clean, or improve.

A lot of work. A lot of pride. And honestly, a lot of satisfaction.
