For decades, cannabis has been believed to lower testosterone in men — a claim largely based on a small 1974 study involving only 20 participants. But new research is challenging that long-standing assumption.
A recent study published in Communications Medicine examined 70 different steroid hormones in men aged 18 to 23 and found that regular cannabis users had testosterone levels about 23% higher than non-users. Researchers also observed increased levels of hormones like DHT and androstenedione, both closely linked to testosterone production.
Rather than suppressing male hormones, the findings suggest cannabis may influence specific hormone pathways connected to the te**es.
Still, scientists warn that higher testosterone does not automatically mean better fertility or reproductive health. Male fertility depends on a complex balance of hormones, s***m quality, and brain-regulated signals. Researchers say the hormonal changes could be the body’s response to altered sensitivity, or simply reflect that men with naturally higher testosterone may be more likely to use cannabis.
The study adds a new perspective to how cannabis affects the endocrine system, but experts say more research is needed to understand the long-term effects on male reproductive health.
