Today is National Depression Screening Day.

Depression screening has become a routine part of many medical visits. But identifying symptoms is only the first step. The harder part is often figuring out where to turn afterward.

Here’s a practical guide to choosing the right kind of support:

Primary care clinician: Often a good place to start. They can check for medical issues that may contribute to depression and can commonly treat mild to moderate depression or anxiety, including with first-line medications when appropriate.

Therapist: This may include a psychologist, clinical social worker (LCSW), professional counselor (LPC), or marriage and family therapist (LMFT). Therapy can help you understand and address factors behind symptoms, such as chronic stress, grief, relationship difficulties, trauma, or unhelpful thought patterns. For some people, therapy on its own is an effective treatment.

Psychiatric nurse practitioner or Psychiatrist: Consider this level of care when symptoms are severe or complex, the diagnosis is uncertain, medications have not helped after one or more reasonable trials, or depression occurs alongside concerns such as bipolar disorder, psychosis, or substance use.

Screening matters but access to the right follow-up care matters just as much.
