One of my favorite techniques to do with gray is “gray blending”. I explain this process being comparable to coloring easter eggs.. the first dip colors the egg but you can still see it was a white egg but if you continue dipping it over and over again, it’ll be all the way blue.. same concept here. Demi permanent gives more of a translucent coverage but you will not see the gray as intensely. Also, it will be less harsh of a line as it grows back in. I like this process because you get the best of both worlds for people who are not ready to take the leap into going natural. This client’s hair was completely salt and pepper when we started. Colored with Yellow Professional in 6.35 and 7.0.

Another gray blending technique I love is weaving in something to break up the banding. This lovely lady used to be an every 5 weeks appointment, we took a long pause on coloring due to some health things, and she came in for a trim to bring me this beautiful band that I decided I wanted to use for education!

I did a basic partial with a demi-permanent 6n to break up the lines and create a softer transition between the brown shades in her ends.

You can see banding but I've never changed formulas, this is what caused me to tell her to go get bloodwork because something was off in how her hair was taking— and SHE WAS NOT USING ROOT SPRAY BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS (i totally thought she was).

Have you ever worked with someone with health issues/takes medication and the hair FLAT OUT turns into a science experiment? I HAVE.
