ROSH CHODESH TAMMUZ: THE FIRST OF THE THREE SUMMER MONTHS

Today, on Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, we begin the first of the three summer months in the Hebrew calendar, Tammuz, Av and Elul, which should be the brginning a season of summer fun - sitting on the beach, swimming in the ocean, hiking in the mountains, or biking along a trail. But unfortunately, Tammuz is the most troubling of all the months. It was in Tammuz, forty days after receiving Torah at Mount Sinai that the Israelites chose to dance around a golden idol, compelling Moshe to shatter the two Tablets containing the Ten Commandments, etched in stone by G-d's own hand! It was on this very same day, the 17th of Tammuz, thousands of years later, that the occupying Roman colonizers breached the walls of Jerusalem, making inevitable, three weeks later, on the 9th of Av, the destruction of the second Holy Temple in the year 70 CE. And all this, the destruction of both the first and second Temple, was precipitated by the sins of the spies, those twelve noble emissaries that Moshe sent to scout out the land of Canaan in preparation for conquering the land. They spend the entire month of Tammuz traveling through the land, from the south to the north, witnessing its rolling hills, its gently flowing streams, its green valleys and its abundant bounty, only to return to Israel's desert encampment and tell the people gathered round that the land that G-d promised was not for them: the cities were too well fortified and the people were too numerous and scary. For their treachery and for the people's perfidious response, their forty days in Canaan were transformed into forty years in the wilderness. And their night of wailing over nothing earned them, or their descendants, the privilege of crying over the destruction of not one, but two Holy Temples!

But none of this was a heavenly decree. These were all man made failings. And what man messes up man can fix! There is nothing intrinsically negative about the month of Tammuz. It can become once again what it was always meant to be - a month of tikkun - of righting our historic wrongs, of believing in HaShem's promises and working towards making them a reality. The spies had nothing but bad things to say about eretz Yisrael? It is up to us to spend the entire month of Tammuz saying only good things about the land of Israel. Seeing and saying only good things about Israel can turn the month of Tammuz into a month of good tidings. May the month of Tammuz be transformed from a month of portending disaster to a month of promise and hope, a harbinger of return and the building of the Holy Temple. Soon! In our days! It is up to us!
