The comment section on my Instagram right now is starting to genuinely concern me.

Not because people disagree with me.

Because women talking about mental health, asking for help, wanting community, or simply speaking honestly about what they’re experiencing seems to make some men furious.

And I keep coming back to the same question:

What about vulnerability in women feels so threatening?

A lot of the comments are being automatically hidden by Instagram, so you may not even be seeing what I’m seeing on my end.

But there is a much bigger conversation here than a few sh*tty comments.

Because if this is how women are spoken to when they say something is wrong, we cannot also act surprised when women are afraid to speak up.

Something is happening here.

And I think we need to talk about it.

A hill I’ll die on:

moms don’t need to ‘earn’ a minute for themselves.

Mental health conditions are the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the U.S.

& while we absolutely need to talk about the medical system, access to care, funding, research, & the massive gaps in women’s health -

we also need to talk about this.

The way women are spoken to & about.

Especially when (maternal) mental illness becomes messy, scary, uncomfortable, or hard to understand.
Full stop.

My personal favorite?

“Women should not be allowed to vote and this entire ordeal has proven that.”

This is just a small sampling of the hundreds of similar comments I’ve personally received over the past two weeks & sadly, I’m seeing the same rhetoric echoed across social media.

To the people reading this & still choosing to speak to & about women this way: do you not understand that this rhetoric is part of the problem? Shame, ridicule, & disbelief make it harder for women to speak up when they’re struggling - & it’s impacting the very women in your home, your family & communities.

It’s no wonder why unaliving & substance use are the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in this country.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their truths & own struggles around maternal mental health.

Unfortunately, for every woman brave enough to share her story, there seems to be someone waiting in the comments to dismiss, shame, or attack her.

Eyes on maternal mental health & EW to the internet sloths sounding off like this.

I hope somehow, you can understand better so you can do better.

Hayden’s interview with Jay Shetty this past May broke me open in the best & worst ways.

She reminded me that I wasn’t alone in the pain I experienced postpartum.

But she also reminded me how desperately we need to better understand women’s mental health & postpartum care in this country.

Fast forward to Lindsay Clancy going to trial, the first person I thought of was Hayden & that interview.

Because if two women with access to high-level healthcare could ask for help, enter treatment, say over & over that something was wrong - & still not receive the care they needed - what does that say about the system the rest of us are relying on?

Hayden lost so much during her battle with postpartum, including custody of her daughter. And when she chose to speak publicly about what she had experienced, she lost work & brand opportunities.

Still, she told the truth.

May we all be brave enough to keep telling the truth, breaking the stigma, & demanding change - so women don’t have to beg for help only to still feel unheard.

Rest in peace, Hayden.

And keep your eyes on maternal mental healthcare.
We have so much work to do.

As soon as the Lindsay Clancy trials started, I thought of Hayden’s story.

Two women. Two very different lives. Both asking for help.

Repeatedly telling the people around them that something was wrong, seeking treatment, navigating diagnoses & the medical system, & still having to white-knuckle their way through a postpartum mood & anxiety disorder.

I keep coming back to the same question: what happens when a mother knows something is wrong, asks for help, & the systems around her still don’t know how to hold her?

If #

In honor of these women & every woman who’s been slighted by the medical system forced to move through crisis alone, we need to do better.

Thank you for your work in the postpartum space, Hayden. RIP ❤️.
