What is a Woods lamp and why is it used in a facial?
A woods lamp is a handheld black light(ultraviolet) that detects bacterial/ fungal skin infections and pigment issues that are not easily seen by the naked eye. By assisting in identifying these skin conditions it becomes a valuable tool in choosing the appropriate facial protocol. It can also help the esthetician determine if pigmentation is dermal or surface level. You can identify these conditions by the color that appears under the light.
Light 💙/ Violet — normal healthy skin
💜— dehydrated skin
🧡— oily areas
💛 — Acne
🤎/💜 — sun damage/ pigmentation
🤍 Spots — Thick dead skin cells
💛/💚 — Fungal
Coral red/pink— bacteria infection
This light must be used in a dark room, clients eyes must be covered, and the light should be no more than 4-5 inches away from face.
In the first video we can see the oil, acne, and pigmentation.
In the second photo, we can classify the congestion as oil and acne.
In the third photo we can identify oil and acne on the nose, and dehydration as well as thick dead skin on the lips. We also see dead skin on the top of the lips.
Lastly in the very last video we can see pigmentation and dehydration as well as thick dead skin on the lips. We can also see that much of the pigmentation is surface level.

extractions
03/26/2026
Have you ever wondered why we need extractions? Or what difference it makes in our skin?
Extractions deeply cleanse the pores by removing sebum, dead skin cells, and debris. Which allows for better product pe*******on, and as you can see with our strawberry example gives a smoother and less textured appearance.
Strawberry extractions is a great way to introduce extractions to students. This activity allows them to practice pressure and gain comfort ability prior to working on the skin.
Let’s Welcome the new class of 03.2026 🥳 So excited to help these students accelerate their careers and push them to the best of their capabilities ✨
Why do we need to know about Transmission of Infection?????
Part of Practicing safety as an Esthetician is Sanitation and the knowledge of transmission of diseases viruses and bacteria as well as prevention procedures. This is always taught within the first week of Esthi school to ensure everyone’s safety as well as upholding National esthetic standards. Do you know the most cost effective intervention for the worldwide control of disease?? If so comment your answer below ⬇️
Meet Krystal! She will be leveling up to Gama her final faze on Monday. This means she is now a senior in the esthetic program providing all services including chem peels & has more than 6weeks experience with clients! Her strongest talents are extractions, waxing and make up application. Here she is performing extractions and she has extracted a great amount of sebum, dirt, and debris.
What are the benefits of extractions??
- they clear clogged pores( such as black heads/white heads)
- removes built up oil, dead skin and debris
- gives the skin a smoother textured appearance
- reduces break outs
- gives a brighter appearance
- allows the skin better absorption of products
Can you do this service by yourself?
- I do not recommend. Receiving extractions from a professional ensures that your skin is properly prepared and softened by using professional only products. Your professional is experienced in the knowledge of products and what should be used following the treatment including calming and soothing the skin afterwards.
- Allowing a professional to do your extractions significantly reduces the chance of hyperpigmentation cause by extraction itself or the post inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by the acne itself.
This treatment is included in all facials! For booking please visit the “Aveda IBW Milwaukee” website and select Krystal’s name to book with her!
